Differences of Opinion

Some stuff has recently been happening with the grove to remind me just how out of sync my opinions are with a good portion of the group ( Read more... )

I can't speak for other Pagan paths but ADF is Nature centered or so the first paragraph of the first page of the membership guide says it is at least. That might be why you might find some eco-pagans lurking about in ADF. It is part of the reason I am an ADF member and probably the only reason Den is.

I also know my fair share of crunchy hippy types that think Religion as a whole is useless and that we should spend all our time healing the Earth and so forth. I also know my fair share of eco-posers in the Pagan world. At least you know what you are and where you are and don't make shit up to make you look like something you aren't.

From what I knew and read about CLG before I came regularly I thought CLG was more more Nature and Earth based than it is. Looks like only a couple of people are so I think you are more of a majority in CLG then you think.

Oh yes, I am very well aware of ADF's position. And no, not surprised to see it be so big a part of ADF. But I was speaking more generally, not specifically about ADF (even though for me personally ADF is my biggest exposure to it, you do find much less of the all hail nature types in Recon circles).

It may be that most in CLG are more moderate, or so I think after reading what you just said. I would've said they were very nature based. But I think you and I represent two extremes on the spectrum, if we both see everyone as being entirely on the other end they are probably in the middle somewhere.

I'm glad you appreciate my honesty. But I have come to expect that from you, probably one of the reasons why I like you so much.

If by any chance you are still awake, check out my latest post. If you're coming to the grove tomorrow I'd like to hear your take on things. Either way, we should probably talk. :-)

I sometimes feel a bit out-of-place with other Pagan types. While I may be big on environmental issues, I am quite emphatically *NOT* a hippie by any stretch. I'm very much an old punk- had green hair & a weird haircut in my early 20's, took great pride in singing (yelling?) along with Jello Biafra & Joey Ramone as I walked across campus with my big black leather jacket & big black boots, & constantly stirred up trouble with the authority figures lurking about. And while I'm much less prone to shouting obscenities in the middle of a restaurant as I used to be, I've still got a healthy distrust of authority figures & all the same attitudes I had back then- I've just learned to be a bit more diplomatic about them. And I've outgrown the desire to shock & offend just to shock & offend- now I shock & offend with a point. And I still like my music loud, hard & fast-- preferably with crunchy guitars. :-D

Ah yes, the hippies. Can't forget about them. Thankfully for me in the small circle of Pagans that I actually know, there are a few of the goth/metal head types so I don't feel too out of place with my purple head and long leather coat. :-)

I'm not sure how earth related spirituality and paganism in general originally got intertwined, but it does seem fairly common to see one and expect the other.

However the whole of Pagan worship doesn't really have anything to do with the environment. And I can't speak for the old timers or first Pagans, but I imagine not all of them were very eco-centric either.

So while I might be a hippy, I see no reason why you'd have to be as well to be considered on the same spiritual path.
