Great Quote

Was watching an episode of House (otherwise known as the best show in years) tonight that I hadn't seen since it initially aired. I remember it for having what I consider to be a very precise and insightful quote from House on the way that normal people react to what is abnormal. Having gotten the exact wording again, I'm recording it here so that ( Read more... )

How true.

On top of that, often those circle people just *assume* that everyone outside the circle is already - by definition of being outside - broken, and that they would all want to be inside the circle if they could.

Yep, everyone really wants to be just like everyone else, the only reason why you wouldn't be is because something wrong is preventing you. And thus its perfectly okay for you to mentally abuse a child, rip apart their self esteem, punish them for being different; because you're really helping them and in the end they'll thank you for it.

I think "normal" is what you make of it. That said, I would certainly want to know if my child was going to have severe mental or physical abnormalities that would prevent him/her from leading a healthy and average life. If they were severe enough, I'd hault the pregnancy, even if I did want the child.

Oh, I agree with you on those points. And yes, this quote was in reference to someone with severe autism. But I think it has wider implications beyond physical or mental disabilities. I have neither, and yet this is very much the way I was treated throughout my childhood and often still to this day, for deviating from what is widely considered normal (and normal pretty much is what the majority of people decide that it is, its not a fixed definition and changes as the majority changes its collective minds).

A great quote! Was this the episode about the kid with the facial deformity? I don't think normal is real, actually. Everyone's definition of it is different so therefore it's a matter of perception not reality.
