Proposition 8: My take

Oct 21, 2008 14:45

Dear all,
The family -- not the individual -- is the basic unit of society. Your family is who you can turn to, your support, and who you support. They raise the next generation. A government that opposes the family can cause its own downfall, and a government that supports long-term, stable families also supports the future.

The family has three basic units. In decreasing importance, they are marriage, blood relations, and friendship. The law recognizes marriage, the closest of these three bonds, with hundreds of benefits. These legal benefits help tie together two people "as one", so that they support each other throughout their lives and, if possible, raise children.

Because I am pro-family and because I am pro-marriage, I vigorously oppose California's Proposition 8.

Nothing of my first two paragraphs -- not even raising children -- depends on the genders of the people being married. I support families in whatever form that best works for everyone involved.

Proposition 8 removes legal protections from real families: dingus23 and fuzzybearca, both wonderful folk, have been together for over 10 years. They were married about a month ago, and they invited Eli and I to their reception. Proposition 8 would invalidate their legal marriage, removing their legal rights.

For the sake of love, commitment, and family, please vote against Proposition 8.
