Life on Mars, or at least Foster City

The last few weeks I’ve been reminded that yes, I am working for a Silicon Valley startup. We’ll just say things have been busy, and on weekends I’m usually inclined to be doing something that either doesn’t involve being in front of the computer or at least requires no thought. (Standard plug: one can follow me on Twitter or FriendFeed as “ ( Read more... )

This is good to know, because I think jakebe and I kind of tend to assume that you do your own thing and aren't really that into invites out to see movies and stuff.

Now that we know you are, we'll definitely include you more often. It would be good to have your IM nicks and cell number though!

I do have a tendency to wander off randomly on my own, it's true, but it's good to actually be social. :) Living at Tugrik's, social things just sort of happened around me. (Sometimes with no advance warning.)

My AIM and Yahoo IM screen name is 'chipotlecoyote'; GTalk is 'layotl@gmail.com'. AIM is probably the most common place for me to pop up, though.

If you find the intersection of 101 and Highway 92, Foster City is southeast of it, right on SF Bay. It's basically a planned community from the 1950s (I think) built on landfill; as far as I can tell, people back then looked across the bay at Alameda and said, "Hey, we can build one of those." So it's sort of like Alameda, except if Alameda was a 1950s-era suburb. "Foster City: Alameda without the character." But it's a nice enough apartment complex, I'm a couple blocks from the water, and it's within close driving distance to interesting walkable downtowns. (And if I'm feeling unmotivated, there's a lot of chain and fast-food restaurants within about a two-mile radius.) So maybe the slogan can be "Foster City: Hey, it's NEAR places you want to be!"

Hmmm, so it's pretty far up there. Oh well...

I would definitely love to hang out with you more often (and more of it indoors, I swear!), but yes, alas, for various reasons that's likely awkward.

Also, as a random amusement, the 'real' unicode quotes in this post totally bork lynx. (And yes, I still use lynx from time to time. Long story.)

Indeed, you're somewhat more than 25 miles away.

Actually, I'm using HTML entities for the quotes, so Lynx *shouldn't* be borked; I just checked with Lynx on my terminal (yes, I have Lynx on my Mac, just because) and it's just displaying them all as normal quotes. Hmm.

Talking about things happening with little warning... :)

Astolpho needed a spot to host a BBQ with some of his friends, so we volunteered. We were hoping you and Kim wanted to come down, hang out and get some free BBQ food. Starting midday on the 4th going until 'whenever'.

We keep meaning to invite you down for things, but then we fail to plan anything at all and just end up fabbing things at the shop until someone yanks us out to do something.

Thanks - I'll certainly come on down. Kim will probably be dependent on whether he feels sufficiently recovered from an illness last weekend that was kicking his butt.
