“Don’t give me any chocolates for Valentine’s Day, senpai,” Ryoma had said to Fuji two days ago. “Or anything embarrassing, like flowers or girly stuff.” He paused a moment and all the other possibilities his boyfriend was liable to come up with crossed his mind like a nightmare on reel. “In fact,” he said hastily, “don’t get me anything for Valentine’s Day.”
For a moment, it appeared that Fuji looked disappointed. But the expression was fleeting and soon his customary smile was back in place. “That’s no fun, Ryoma,” he protested, wrapping his arm around the younger boy as they walked home side-by-side. “How else will all your fans know that you’re taken?”
“Like you don’t make it obvious every day?” muttered Ryoma under his breath. What with the constant public displays of affection, it would be hard to find a soul in Seishun Gakuen Academy who didn’t know who Ryoma’s boyfriend was. Or, more accurately, who Fuji Syuusuke had claimed as his own, (approach with caution and risk to life, limb, liberty, self-respect, dignity, reputation, and anything else held dear).
A few minutes passed in silence, as the two Seigaku High tennis regulars continued down the sidewalk. “All right,” Fuji conceded at last. “I won’t get you chocolates for Valentine’s Day.”
Ryoma gave him a sidelong look. “Nothing for Valentine’s Day,” he stressed.
A glimmer of a pout. “I won’t give you anything for Valentine’s Day,” the tensai promised reluctantly. He ruffled his hand through Ryoma’s hair. “But I think I’ll need some convincing to keep that promise, ne?” His blue eyes glinted as he slid his fingers under Ryoma’s shirt.
“Not here,” was Ryoma’s response, which, Fuji noted delightedly, was not a “no.”
Two days later, on Valentine’s Monday, boy wonder went to school with Momoshiro as usual, completed early morning practice, changed into his school uniform, and walked unsuspectingly into his classroom.
To his relief, his seat wasn’t decorated with pink and red ribbons as it had been last year, his desktop liberally scattered with flower petals and boxes of chocolates. However, Fuji was waiting for him, leaning a hip against his desk and smiling in that irresistibly seductive way of his.
Ryoma’s heart skipped a beat, until he noticed the box of chocolates in Fuji’s hands.
“Fuji-senpai,” he hissed when he was within three feet of the other boy. “I told you not to get anything for Valentine’s Day.”
“Saa, don’t make a scene, Ryoma.” Fuji handed him the box serenely. “Open it.”
Reluctantly, Ryoma accepted the box and untied the white ribbon. He lifted the lid and stared.
The chocolates were blue.
Ryoma looked from the box of chocolates, to Fuji, and back again-eyeing them dubiously, he had to quell the urge to ask his boyfriend if they were poisoned. Fuji wouldn’t do that to him…would he?
“They’re homemade,” Fuji said calmly, tone almost pleased. “I got Inui to help me make them.”
His boyfriend wanted to kill him!
Ryoma stared in horror. “Senpai.”
“It’s just food coloring,” the tensai finally reassured him, a genuine smile breaking across his face. He leaned down and brushed a kiss against Ryoma’s mouth, disregarding the other students in the classroom. “And it’s not for Valentine’s Day.”
Biting his lip and resisting the urge to deepen the kiss, Ryoma pulled back and looked down at his chocolates. “Then what’s it for?” he asked, voice just a little unsteady.
“It’s been 50 days since your birthday,” replied Fuji cheerfully. “Doesn’t that warrant a gift?”
