No Way Back Into Love
Super Junior/SNSD, Donghae/Jessica, PG, 360 words
Donghae never fell out of love with her.
He never fell out of love with her but they ended things because they wouldn't last, not in this industry. Not when she was breaking out and making her first stand with her group and he was making it bigger than ever. There was too much to risk, years of sweat and aching nights, endless dreams that began and ended with a stage, a microphone, a screaming audience...
They ended things because they would never last, because there was too much to risk, not because he ever fell out of love with her. Donghae doesn't think he will ever cherish another girl the way he cherished Jessica. She wasn't his first love, not even his first time, but she was his first in so many other ways - the first to steal his breath away and kiss it back, the first to make him want to be so endlessly tender, the first one to give him everything and to take it all away again.
Looking back, she was probably the first one to break his heart.
"It's not really goodbye," she whispered against his cheek, lips soft as they grazed his skin. She was so close, so warm, and yet he felt the distance between them stretch wide like a canyon. "We'll still see each other all the time. It just won't be the same."
It won't be the same.
It'd never be the same again, when he saw her a day later, three months later, two years later. His heart would still skip a beat and settle into a quiet ache. He would still trace her subconsciously with his eyes, her delicate features and her beautiful smile. She still took his breath away, but now. Now, as she sat two seats away from him, close enough to touch but too far to ever be his again, Donghae knew she could still steal his breath, but she'd never kiss it back again, in little bursts of laughter and air and sweetness.
Sometimes he wished he could fall out of love with her.
But sometimes he was glad he still had this memory, if he could have nothing else.
