So today when I went outside I was greeted with a lovely site, a ten foot ditch in front of my building.  So that was what all the noise was last night and this morning.  The ditch runs pretty much the length of the street west of my building.  Don't worry we were given bamboo bridges to cross over, I'm sure they are very safe.  *grimaces*  So here
