Peace Like a River, by Leif Enger. The narrator's voice is comfortable and endearing; he had the opportunity to indulge in bathos but refrained.
A Spot of Bother, by Mark Haddon. Not as good as The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time, and a bit too long. Still, it was fun, and Haddon can turn a phrase.
