When we were desperate, we'd just get a muslin drop cloth from the hardware store and use that. Hell, the Moron Life clubhouse backdrop is just a HUGE muslin dropcloth that we painted.
You can pick up muslin super cheap at any fabric store. Just buy it several yards long and sew it to the width you want, perhaps with a 'drawstring' like foldover at top and bottom for cords to tie it up with?
There's an easy fabric store on Mass Ave in Arlington Heights close to the Foodmaster.
Canvas would prolly be more durable, but you can cheat and go to the Salvation Army and buy some plain white sheets. it is short term, but you can usually double them up and make them last.
