Ides Gonna Have Fun

When Sasha first knew Ali, her birthday was not a happy time. With the coming of the children, however, came a majority opinion that all birthdays should be cause for celebration (and presents, and cake, and hats). Thus, the Ides are a day of decorations, of cheesecake, of presents wrapped and made (many sheets of construction paper gave their ( Read more... )

Ali knew that Something Was Up, but also knew that Certain Parties perhaps preferred she not know, so Ali was busily cleaning dirt out from under her nails after her early-morning gardening. Davyn's arrival was met with faked surprise and genuine giggles, and the poor cat was soon freed of his message.

"And how much bacon did they have to promise you to get your help with this, hmm?"

If Davyn's expression is any indication, there were no promises of additional bacon. Quite the reverse--Sasha noted he needed to lose some weight, and that either diet or exercise would be a good solution.

And it's hard not to let the children get away with things that don't involve tail-pulling.

The invitation reads as follows:
"Alison Catriona Trainer (von Hammer),
you are
Cordially Invited
to an afternoon of
Fun, Cheesecake, and Presents,
on this, the
Event
of your
Birthday.
We Love You, Mommy, XOXO"

While the script is Sasha's elegant hand, it's possible that the Goslings had some influence on the specific words and layout.

"Aww, poor put-upon cat," Ali sympathizes, scritching around the party hat before reading the invitation. It's adorable, and she makes sure to tuck it very carefully away in a drawer before going to see what's going on.

And if she gets a hat, too.

"Oh me oh my, is there something going on up here?"

"Mommy!" There's a surge of children racing to give Ali her birthday hugs, then tugging her hands to lead her to the Birthday Chair (a dining room chair, heavily decorated with tinsel, ribbons, and a sparkly silver pipe-cleaner halo). Ali needn't worry that the halo is her hat, though; she gets a spectacular, wide-brimmed creature with a feather floofier than a basket of kittens. "Happy birthday, mommy!" comes the family chorus, followed by Sasha's softer, "happy birthday, love."

By the look of things, Davyn was not the only pet be-hatted and decorated for the festivities. It doesn't seem anyone escaped without at least a hat.
