England! England England England! ENGLAND!

Dec 05, 2005 05:23

I still can't quite believe where I am. I'm in England, the country of my birth, and I'm in my aunty's house. I'm surrounded by Englishness everywhere I turn- semi-detached houses, freezing cold air and pound signs instead of dollar signs- but it's hard to believe I'm actually here.

My flight was... interesting. Thirteen hours, yeah! *sarcasm drips ( Read more... )

england, rockclimbers, good times

As a fellow rockclimber (age 21), I feel your idea of a rockclimber magazine has definite merit. I am sick of reading my non-rockclimber sister's cleo etc. and finding nothing but articles on how to make your male rockclimbing partner happy. Ewww. So, I second your idea of a mag just for us.

Also, as I have seen you around the DEBS board and know you are a DEBS fan, a young rockclimbing Australian, and now I read that you have English roots, I have decided to friend you, as we have all the above in common. Feel free to do as you wish with this info :) Oh yeah, I love Garbage too.

I recognised your screen name instantly from All Things DEBS! Thanks for seconding my idea of a rockclimber magazine- I'm not exactly sure at present what I'll do with my idea... maybe conduct a little market research where I can, figure out what rockclimbers want in a magazine and exactly how I'd get a rockclimbing magazine off the ground. Can you imagine what the evil fundamentalists would do if my dream became a reality and there was suddenly a magazine telling young rockclimbers to embrace their true selves?

I really, really love Garbage. I actually saw them in concert, you know- definitely the best concert I've ever been to. Shirley Manson started handing out champagne to the people in the front row. :D

Friended you back. *scurries off*

I reckon someone needs to tell the young rockclimbers it is okay to be a rockclimber, and damn the fundamentalists! At least with the fundamentalist crusade against your mag you would get loads of free publicity :)

I've been trying to climb my own share of rocks and I've found that there are a more than a few magazines that cater to that where I'm from.

Now, don't freak out, but I am an American and as such, have access to a number of rock climbing media. Thing is...I don't read as much as I could, as much as I congregate with other rock climbers and get tips and whatnot from them, but I could round up a list if you'd like. Maybe there's a way for you to get some of those to you.

We also have a rock climber's station on satellite here and a show that tells you where to go for rock climbing all over the world... Apparently, Melbourne is a great place to climb rocks. Who knew?

I also own DEBS and though I like Garbage, I think I'm far more attached to Aimee Allen. I just got her 'I'd Start A Revolution' album and it's on repeat.

No pressure to add me or anything, but I added you after you joined up the DEBS community. Not that that happens with ALL in that community, but, you know. You seemed interesting. And I'm fond of Aussies, so. Yeah.

*goggles* Seriously? A rock climber's TV station? That's incredible! I'll try to remember what you said about Melbourne being a good place for rock climbing. Thanks for that!

It's very kind of you to offer to compile that list for me. I could get some good ideas from that sort of thing. I'm aware that there are loads of magazines for rock climbers out there- I've seen them very occasionally in the newsagency in the town where I live. Thing is, I've never even seen a grown woman picking one of those up and paying for them, let alone a teenager. It'd be really great, in my opinion, for rockclimbing teenage girls to have their very own magazine. I think it would remind them that they're not alone.

As a matter of interest, what are the names of some of those rockclimbing magazines?

Maybe all the grown women have their magazines delivered? Or they go at night or some off the wall time when the crowd's low? ::shrug::

Some rock climbing mags would be:

Curve
Advocate
She Magazine
Out Magazine
LN (this is actually a newspaper that I usually see in rock climbing venues; The 'n' stands for news... ;)
Diva News, which is actually a UK magazine that can also be found online.
Cybersocket
Echelon (for business professionals)
Pride

Most of these I just found doing a random google, so no worries... Lots out there, some or all also have online access.

As for teens... Don't know about magazines, but there are books if you search Amazon.com. And I do mean the states' version of it, if you haven't already been there, if only for the pricing; the inventory might be different, too.

Your career aspirations sound awesome! XD You must tell us when you get those novels off the ground, for I shall have to read them. *nods happily*

I also love your rockclimbing euphemism. ^_^ Another teenage rockclimber in Melbourne! Who knew?! *bops* If you don't mind me asking, what year of school are you doing next year? Or have you finished now?

Sorry if it took me ages to reply to this comment- I only just saw it. *blushes* Sorry!

To answer your question, I'm going into Year Twelve in 2006, and my seventeenth birthday is in February. *dances around happily* What about you? Are you still at high school? Apologies if this is bursting your happy bubble in any way, but I'm actually from Perth.

That's okay! I'm usually quite sporadic with my replies, regardless. ^_^

Awesome! I'm doing Year 12 next year as well, and my seventeenth birthday is in May. I'm studying Biol, Chem, Maths Methods, English, and Psych; what subjects are you taking?
*laughs* And don't worry, you're not bursting my happy bubble; that's quite hardy around Christmas. ^_~ I don't know why I thought you were from Melbourne... Perhaps the assocation with Lish?

Anyway, the fact that you use the word 'apologies' is totally cool. XD Go Perth!
