Teach your own kids to clean up

Dec 28, 2014 21:38

Hello everyone, so I have a very interesting tale of entitlement for you today. I like to watch the 'Nerdy Nummies' channel on Youtube where basically (for anyone unfamiliar with it) the host, Rosanna makes cute little nerdy treats. Such as 'Legend of Zelda Triforce Lemon Bars', 'Minecraft Candy Pops', and cute things like that. This particular ( Read more... )

selfishness, mom's are annoying, entitlement

That mother is so silly! Text recipes don't tell people to clean as they go so she shouldn't be bothered by a recipe video not telling people to wash their hands, wipe counters, and scrub mixing bowls.

I want to see those videos. Those treats sound fun and yummy! :D

What irks me more than her question itself is that as far as I can tell the videos aren't aimed at at kids, more nerdy adults. I get kids are going to watch them but why does everything have to be about kids! Watch the videos with your children by all means, but don't try and make them change things for them.

This^^

If it were a children's educational show, i see the point in the request, but it's not. I would think her largely adult audience would feel very much like they were being talked down to (and their time wasted) if cleaning up was part of the stream. Also, i'm not familar with this particular stream, but if it's popular enough, there's at least half a chance that she can afford to have someone clean for her and doesn't actually have to do so. For instance, does one expect the Food Network to show the cooks cleaning? Nope. Why? Beacause there's a crew for that. Not saying that this woman has a crew, but if she's cooking for others in her household, it's likely that they're doing the cleaning (politeness rule of thumb when someone cooks for ya).

This! EVERYTHING is not about kids. Deal with it, lady.

I agree that it probably wasn't appropriate to jump on her about it, but I don't think it really was necessarily such a "reasonable" request, either. The point of these videos is not to educate kids about how to use a kitchen. The point, as far as I can see, is to show, in an entertaining way, how to make some cute treats. Including clean up in the presentation would just drag things out and make the videos last longer without adding any real value.

As someone who makes educational videos for YouTube, I have to agree with your point ( ... )

Yeah. Part of supervising kids is making them understand when they want to make an art craft or something, they need to help tidy up afterwards. They can't leave a mess from making cake pops for someone else to clean up who had no part in the fun of making the cake pops and didn't get any of the cake pops.

if anything she should be complaining about all those stupid TV commercials for cleansers where the kids make a huge mess and the mom smiles and cleans up after the little pigs.

I watched one that has a 5yo boy entertaining his little brother by blowing bubbles in his chocolate milk, splashing the table, and mom flashes a smile at them from nearby before whipping out the featured cleaning product. I couldn't help thinking a real-life mother of a 5yo and a toddler is far from amused by milk bubbling out of a glass onto the table because she's seen it happen dozens of times.

there's one from a few years ago where a kid deliberately dumps garbage all over the floor while cutesy music plays in the background. eurgh.

I know the one you mean! And I seem to remember doing that as a kid, and GETTING YELLED AT for it. No real life Mom is going to be amused by that.

Somewhere along the line, parents like her forgot that THEY are supposed to be the role models for their kids.

Sure, "it takes a village" and all that, but the parents are still going to be the strongest influence on the kid's behaviour. If Mum consistently cleans up after herself and encourages Junior to do the same in age-appropriate increments, this becomes a total non-issue. Then when Junior goes out into the world and observes slobs like me, Mum can teach him about different strokes for different folks instead of expecting him to copycat every human he encounters..

(I'm excluding Dad from this comment simply because there's no mention of him in the OP's example, if indeed there is a dad or dads or other mom or what have you.. of course their input is equally important. Felt like I had to add that because it felt sexist and squicky to just comment on the mother's cleaning habits alone.)
