Jul 22, 2012 21:50

So as most people know, (if not I will remind you) I am taking two summer classes; Personal and Community health and Human Reproductive biology. In these two classes the subject of kids gets brought up. A few of my fellow classmates were glad about my honesty and respected my decision. All except for this women. Under the cut is what she commented.

I thought it was just one huge bingo, and then I was like 'Nah I must be reading this wrong.' I'm glad that you picked up on it as well, and proof that I'm not paranoid.

Its a very well put bingo - mostly just the language she uses, it doesn't come across as condesending or patronising or anything like that...well to me it doesn't.

It does to me.

"As we get older we become wiser, and our thought process gets broader, thinking deeply having kids takes a whole lot of commitment along with dedication."

That reads as "I'm wiser and broader thinking than you and I know you'll change your mind later, once you can think as wisely and broadly as me."

That combined with the grammar issues just screams, "Ignorant and can't be bothered to think, but believes somehow this means she cares and is the one who can judge."

Yes it does.

"As we get older we become wiser, and our thought process gets broader, thinking deeply having kids takes a whole lot of commitment along with dedication. Still now is very young to be thinking about it, but time fly's and just like that we will all be in our careers. So what I'm trying to say is maybe now your not focused on that part of life which is not a bad thing because school would make more sense to complete then to worry about kids."

Translation: You're young and immature so your judgement cannot be trusted and your decisions are thus worthy of doubt.

This person I can guarantee wouldn't have said that same if the OP had announced she wanted six kids.

"Also you can find the right person for you anytime, as you never know when God will send the right one for you, and when the time comes, you will be ready. "

Translation: I'm going to assume you're heterosexual and Christian, oh and you will change your mind and be ready for kids later.

In short, it's condescending, patronising, and flat out rude.

Oh yeah! "Once you actually grow up and develop some real life experience, you'll totally change your mind, kidlet. In the meantime enjoy school"

It's a really complicated, roundabout way to say, "you'll change your mind someday".

Good then my reply back to her was justified.

What did you say to her, if you don't mind me asking.

I told her that she has no idea what my life is like. I would rather be happy being alone than to be miserable and saddled with kids that I never wanted. I also said that I am taking every precaution short for sterilization in never having kids. I think I also mentioned that just because she believes in god doesn't necessarily mean that I do. If a man cannot except that I will never change my mind on kids then he doesn't need to be with me.

I think it does come across as patronising - especially "Nobody is forced to have children nor should they feel they are, as you can still live a great life full of independence."

Just like you can still live a life of independence if you say.........lose all of your limbs. Cause it will also be part of God's plan. :/
