I like it.

While some places are for adults only, I don't expect the whole world to be like that. I think that 'semi-bans' like this are a good compromise. And really, it's a good way to calm the child down--move them away from whatever worked them up in the first place until they can chill out.

agreed.

my own mother always likes to comment when she sees/hears screaming brats: "when you did that, i took you outside or to the car".

i have seen plenty of today's parents do the same.

funny how so many other parents of today can't manage that simple little feat.

It used to be that parents did that on their own when they had a crying child that wouldn't stop. I recall my parents leaving restaurants numerous times when my younger brother kept crying. It was considered only polite not to keep disturbing others.

I was thinking the same thing. People these says are just selfish and don't give a shit. Not to mention some people say you should let them "cry it out"

Yeah, just the other day I saw a lady outside Chilis as we were going in, her kiddo was screaming bloody murder about..... well, who knows what. I have no idea how she was being so calm, trying to reason with him - "we could go back in and have dinner with everyone if you would just calm down. Just take a few deep breaths now." *screeeeeeeech*

lol poor lady.

if we had gone in and she was just sitting there while the kid screeched, I would have been pissed. Thankfully I just had to get by her as fast as possible, like the smokers who stand right outside the doors.

Why do people like to stand right outside the doors to a place when they've got something rude? (cigarette, screaming kid, etc)

I think that's a really respectable rule. I don't think that children should be banned from all places. Some of my best childhood memories were eating at fancy restaurants. Not all children scream, and some are perfectly capable of being well-behaved in public.

I like that it also implies that parents should watch their children.

A simple and elegant solution.

It does make me sad, though, that we now need rules to achieve what used to be basic common courtesy.

This, exactly.

Yeah, this. This shouldn't need to be a rule, much less a rule that's being written about in the press. It used to be common fucking courtesy that if you're somewhere that you don't need to stay (restaurant vs ER for example) and you can't calm a kid down quickly, you took them outside to cry it out.

Hell, I'd never complain about a kid wailing in a supermarket checkout line; I'm not in the supermarket for my enjoyment and the parent is on their way out and it's unreasonable to expect them to ditch the groceries and run outside with the kid, but a restaurant?

Lots of restaurants in Switzerland (well, around where I lived anyway--mountain town hehe ^^) would let well-trained dogs into a restaurant (sleep under the table and no bothering other customers), but would not let kids in. My dad thought this was strange, but me and my mum thought it was hilarious, and she said I must be running the restaurant somehow XD.

I absolutely agree with this proposal. Quiet kids, or kids just making normal kid noise--FINE. Kids scuttling about screaming and causing general unrest? Not fine. Especially not fine if they start throwing food. Parents: Bring shit for your kids to do so they don't get bored and become akin to crack-addled spider monkeys.
