Serenity now, serenity now

At the aforementioned party, the subject of Firefly came up. Someone said he hadn't watched but decided he didn't like it because everyone kept telling him how great it was. If everyone liked it, he figured it couldn't be very good. (I admit I might not be fully capturing the subtlety of his position.)

I was surprised by the strength of my ( Read more... )

My ex used to watch it and liked it a lot. I never really did get into it.

I don't know why. Everyone else says it's wonderful...I guess I'm just defective. (FWIW, I didn't like Buffy or Angel either, despite occasionally watching an episode with friends or family who did.)

Hmmm. I always wondered about you. Did you like the movie True Stories? Answer carefully now, this is for all the marbles.

Yeah, Firefly is the kind of show that you can use to judge a person based on how much they like it. IIRC, I was the one who introduced you to Firefly when I brought over the DVD box set.

Yes you were and I appreciate it. I was skeptical at the time. Fox had been promoting aggressively and I thought, "It must be intended for the masses--clearly, I would not like it." (Don't tell grieve.)

I think a lot of people can't get past the "wild west" elements. They come into it expecting a clean utopian type universe like in Star Trek. But, I think the depiction of space travel and interstellar society in Firefly is much more likely to be accurate. In reality you're going to have lots of backwater worlds with relatively low levels of tech.

I have seen that argument before. Basically that they don't like something, because it is popular. What a stupid, elitist position. "Oh the masses like it, I am smarter than the masses, therefore I will not like it."

Bah!

Firefly on the other hand is good, with the exception of the one bad episode.

I had a similarly strong reaction to a friend's statement that he didn't like Crash Test Dummies because the lead singer sounded like some other guy with a deep bass voice. I didn't see the similarity and found it irrelevant anyway. Seemed like a poor reason not to give a band a chance.

What is this bad Firefly episode of which you speak?
