I still think it smacked of chikuru-justification, but... I did a sample search of the internet and many (at least 50%) of the sites I glanced through listed January 6th as an option. As popular were immediately after Christmas, the week between Christmas and New Years, just after New Years, and the idea that they not be taken down at all. There is no overwhelming vote that January 6th is The Date.

Not that I would ever give anyone a hard time about when they put up or take down lights. Yea lights!

January 6 is the Feast of the Epiphany, which celebrates (among other things, I believe) the arrival of the Magi.
