Annie's been trying to chewing her tail off and she has a huge open sore on it. She has another sore (not open) on the inside of her left hind leg as well. What does my mom do? Nothing. I yelled at her, tears in my eyes, telling her she needs to take Annie to the vet or at least call the vet and ask them what to do about, but all she does is smile

I know this is a lil late but thought id throw in my two cents. My dog (basset hound) does the same thing every summer. There will be huge bald spats and ripped up skin where it looks like the tried to chew her tail off. I did question the vet and they tried to say its fleas but my dogs are routinly treated for fleas, and ive checked them both neither of them has fleas. Also my dog has very bad dry skin that gets worse during the summer (which is usually when she tries to bite her tail off). Im thinking this is why my dog does it, the dry skin irritates her, theres some stuff you can buy to spray on it, if you want I can get you the name, it does not hurt them but it does help with the itching. Thats prolly whats wrong with your dog to though im not a vet so dont quote me :) But im guessing its the same problem.

Yeah I will get it for you. I dont have it here (I forgot it at my folks place) but I will be buying a new bottle to stop them chewing their own tales off tomorrow. Ill give you the name as soon as I get back from the critter store. Hopefully it helps, you might also try oatmeal shampoo (i think thats what it is, once again ill let you know when i pick it up).
