I had posted a while ago in a few communities asking about dog food for my two Chihuahuas and up coming new dog (Great Dane) later this year.  I was debating about going to either Solid Gold or Chicken Soup.  I had a few recommendations and went out today searching.  This is what one lady in the store said to me.

1. Chicken Soup has caused deaths ( Read more... )

The concern over the wheat is a fungus called aflatoxin, which has also been found in people food. It's terrifying to think of anyone's pets becoming ill from their food having mold, but to be fair many human foods have also become contaminated with the mycotoxin.

The Horizon stuff looks okay to me though. I do like that it has a probiotic mix in it for the puppy tummies. I've only ever fed Monkey Innova and Chicken Soup so I can't say how the other brands are. My parents feed their Whippet Solid Gold and she does well on it.

Chicken Meal, Hulless Barley, Whole Grain Rye,

Meal, grain, grain. Not a great start.

They put in beat pulp with "sugar removed" but from what i understand the only reason they ever put beet pulp in is for sugar content so i dont know why it's there.

Performatrin is going to be all meal and grains too.
I would stick wiht the Solid Gold or the Innova I think but I dont have the ingredients to compare.

Beet pulp sans sugar is usually added to add fiber.

Im hoping that the thing about Innova isn't true. I researched it quite well before i began feeding it to my chihuahuas and I was told it was the best ffood you can give them besides feeding raw. I feed the kibble, after my huge bag of innova evo is gone, im switching to the canned and supplementing via treats with the kibble...i had to buy a big bag because the store is quite far and when we got there, even though i called ahead to check to see if they had the small $7 bag, they only had huge $18 bag which i wasnt happy with because of the freshness thing...its going to take them so long to get through. anyway, my dogs loved chicken soup when they were on it.

The protien levels in Evo have always frightened me.

It's 42% I think. I've always read that dogs need something around 25ish percent.

I feed Buzz Chicken Soup right now because the ingredients are pretty much the same as Innova Puppy, but it's a little less expensive.

I can't decide what to feed when I switch to adult food though. Maybe regular Innova. The protien is 24%.

From everything I have heard and read, Innova Evo is the best next to raw. I don't believe it is 42% protein...I have to check my bag, but it is good protein, good carbs, etc, highly digestable. I don't think it causes anything bad, rawdogs people have never said anything like that...you could ask there.

Honestly I really don't know if it's true that that level of protein is bad. I figure dogs eating raw are probably getting high levels of protein too.

So who knows really. I'm still scared.

Well I know that too much protein can be bad, but yes, raw dogs do get a lot of protein, so maybe it is just good protein that is the key.
