Quinn rubbed an eye with a knuckle. "I never turned into an animal," she said. "Maybe the island will jinx me for saying that and I'll get stuck with the flamingos in the pond forever."

"I don't think even Fandom would be that mean. Unless you know something I don't," she said, a little worriedly because she'd never turned into an animal either.

"... oh God, what if I made Fandom be that mean just by saying it?" Quinn worried. "But no,I've never heard of it happening either."

Ender hadn't talked to Quinn since... well, that insane weekend she had gotten so shaken up about.

But she had been a friend of his brother's, and considering that one, mad bit of history, he somehow felt inclined to at least say hello before she went.

He knocked on the open door, not wanting to enter without warning.

"Hey," Quinn said, surprised but not exactly unhappy to see ... well, anyone, but Ender in particular. "What's up?"

"Wandering the halls, keeping an eye out for anyone who shows signs of packing," Ender volunteered. "And who would I happen to run into but you?"

"Serendipity," Quinn said, banter just a touch wobbly as she flashed a smile. "You're sticking around a while, huh?"

"Man, it's going to be a little more boring here when you're gone," Kenzi said, folding her arms and pouting. "Now who do I torture?"

"I'm so sad. Maybe there'll be some stuck-up blond in the newbies tomorrow for you to latch onto," Quinn suggested. "World's an open book, Kenz."

Kenzi sighed dismally. "Maaaybe. At least if there is, I'll have the home court advantage." She wandered around the room, picking up pens, pennies, earrings... "Just promise you'll keep the pink dye. You looked so cool with that."

"I know. The bottle's in my box," Quinn promised. "It really was an excellent stress relief."

She looked at what Kenzi was doing for a moment. "Are you picking up the stuff I didn't bother with?"

"I'm going to have no friends at all at the end of this week," Rilla wailed.

"I'm sorry," Quinn said. It was really rather distressing, to be wailed at like that. "There's letters! And, uh, William's in your grade, right?"

"Right," Rilla said, "and Mr. Nelson, but I'm not sure it's proper to only have boys as friends."

"I think it's fine," Quinn said. "Anyhow, there's a whole new batch of people. Probably there'll be a couple cool girls in there."

She hoped so, anyhow.

"Do you think you'll keep up with StuCo and the sorority next fall?"
