From the bunny farm, again: "There are only two things in life you can count on: death, and taxes."
"You've obviously never met Prime."
Why are the bunnies so rabid? I actually woke up yesterday in the middle of the night to write out a few lines of dialogue. That is sick and wrong! Curse you, bunnies that don't even belong to me!
Title: Death Is Cheap
Rating: PG13- mentions of violence and character (almost) death
Summary: Optimus Prime lies dying in the med bay. The humans rush to comfort their Autobot allies...only to discover the third thing in life you can count on.
--------------------------------------
"...damn." Epps said. He looked at Lennox, who was sitting across from him, clutching a cup of cold coffee, sporting the same deadened expression. They were both in shock, and they weren't the only ones: after Optimus' fall in the forest during the incident with the Fallen, they'd all remembered that their alien allies were not immortal. But Optimus had an air of invincibility, and a sword in his arm, and no one had really expected him to be grievously injured again, only a few months after the disaster in Egypt.
Barriacde had shown up with reinforcements. The Decepticons had quietly taken over a power plant and been refueling, unable to get energon from their forces in orbit, when the Autobots had noticed something odd in the energy readings begin taken (readings being taken illegally, but that was beside the point when Decepticons were involved). They'd sent out a team to investigate- Prime had taken Bumblebee and Sideswipe with him to see what was going on, only to be ambushed. There had been no warning, just a sudden barrage of fire and the flash of claws. Bumblebee and Sideswipe, fighting a Decepticon each, had come out on top; three of them had jumped on Prime; as he tried to shield the humans, he was shot repeatedly in the chest.
Ratchet hadn't even sworn when they'd flown him back; just barked at them to bring him into the med bay and gotten down to work.
"Unbelievable." Lennox muttered. "How did they get him?"
"You know Prime. He believes in all that 'sentient beings have the right to freedom' stuff."
"Bumblebee and Sideswipe okay? I mean, they've known Optimus for like millions of years. I've known him for two and I'm scared out of my mind."
"We should go talk to them." Epps agreed. He stood up, grateful to have something to do. The aftermath of a mission, after a fw months of nothing, had left no grunt work to do and no battles to fight.
-----------------------------
Bumblebee and Sideswipe were in the rec room. It was a gigantic, underground room big enough for the Autobots to party, and they were sitting on a metal slab in the middle of the room that acted like a couch. Playing video games. Laughing.
"Hey, Wiil, Robert." Bumblebee said. His voice was still a scratchy mess, but he could talk now and be understood. "You look down."
"Yeah...Optimus is still in medical." Lennox said.
"It sucks- I lost three cubes of high grade. If Prime could have managed to wait another two weeks..." Sideswipe sighed.
"...you bet on when your boss would get injured?" Epps asked slowly, unsure if this was one of those weird cultural things.
"You know how it is. Prime gets slagged, he almost dies, he lives, the Decepticons are totally shocked by his miraculous recovery, we kick aft. The usual stuff."
"...Prime almost dying is...normal."
"Of course. He has this complex about protecting people with his body or something. Normally it's Ironhide's job to get shot for him, but Prime didn't bring him along. He has twenty cubes riding on his bet, actually, so he might have purposefully left Ironhide here."
"Optimus...got shot...so he could get high grade." Lennox confirmed. This entire conversation was bizarre.
"You didn't hear it from us." Sideswipe said cheerfully. "But Prime does have a sense of humor. Unlike, say, Prowl."
"...so...this is all normal. Prime getting slagged. But you were worried when he actually died." Epps said.
"If it doesn't kill him within five minutes, it doesn't take." Bumblebee explained. "When Optimus was killed protecting Sam, I...almost didn't believe it. But he came back."
"This has happened how many times now?" Lennox asked.
"Way, way too many. You know how humans say the only things in life you can count on are going offline and paying taxes?" Sideswipe asked.
Bumblebee finished, "The Autobots say the only things you can count on are Starscream and Optimus Prime."

I really don't like the way this turned out, but the bunny is no longer biting, so...maybe I'll come back to it?
