Bela Zsolt -  Nine Suitcases

This is a Holocaust memoir by a Hungarian Jewish Communist.  It deals with his time both in a Hungarian ghetto awaiting deportation to Auschwitz and his time as a forced labourer with the Hungarians of Army Group South.  It's very good if, of course, somewhat disturbing.  What's particularly good is the way it deals ( Read more... )

Ooh, I haven't read Powell since...hate to say when. Great idea, to re-read. I don't think I ever read the whole thing.

That is a beautiful summary of Dance. I have almost finished reading it for the first time (for some reason I have been stuck for months on the last volume, which I'm not finding as appealing as the rest). The whole series, actually, wasn't easy going for me - perhaps the wit is too dry and understated. It's not the kind of prose I'm usually drawn to. But just when I was ready to stop I would come across a chunk of 20 pages or so that would be absolutely riveting.

It's clearly the kind of work that merits rereading. I'm sure that the second time different bits will stand out from the ones that stood out the first time round.
