Today's Globe and Mail leads on an investigation of the received by prisoners handed over by the Canadian armed forces to the Afghan authorities. Just incredible. There's hardly ever media coverage of the war in Afghanistan, unless Canadian soldiers get killed. Most Canadians think that the troops are there for peacekeeping. Probably most are against the mission anyway, but there's utterly no public debate about it. Who ever heard of fighting a war that no one knows about?

Well there is actually a long tradition of it but it's not something Canada has been stupid enough to do recently. One particularly obscure Victorian campaign was the stimulus for Edward lear's "Who, or why, or which, or what,
Is the Akhond of Swat?"

I'm so embarrassed. The Maher Arar story was extremely traumatizing for me, and this is just really upsetting.
