As far as diapers go, for the most part we are going to start out with prefolds from Green Mountain Diapers. We have some "one-size" diapers (Bum Genius) but they're too big for newborns. The cotton prefolds just seem to be the easiest to get clean. I'm planning on exclusively breastfeeding, which apparently makes cleaning the diapers really easy. No scraping or soaking involved. It's not til they're on solids that you have to do anything with the poo. I figure I'll worry about that then!
