The prospect of cloth diapering is so much less daunting now that we have a new dryer! It's something I've been planning on for years, but in the recent months I was starting to freak out a bit because our dryer sucked SO MUCH. I am so excited about it again now that I actually have the ability to wash and dry them properly! Unfortunately I've ( Read more... )

We'd like to cloth diaper, but I'm really intimidated by the work involved. I'd need the most low maintenance cloth diapers in existence! I don't want to spend my life scraping and soaking and laundering diapers. Do you have high efficiency machines? We do and I sometimes wonder if they'll be strong enough to really clean a cloth diaper!

My washer isn't HE but it's only about 5 years old and it works really well. It's a top loader which is supposedly easier to get diapers clean. The new dryer is a Samsung steam dryer though we've not hooked up the water line to be able to steam stuff yet. But cotton things dry in about 30 minutes or so, which is fantastic compared to the 90 min-2 hours my "old" (3 year old!!!) dryer took. It also has a "sanitize" cycle but I think that takes a really long time.

As far as diapers go, for the most part we are going to start out with prefolds from Green Mountain Diapers. We have some "one-size" diapers (Bum Genius) but they're too big for newborns. The cotton prefolds just seem to be the easiest to get clean. I'm planning on exclusively breastfeeding, which apparently makes cleaning the diapers really easy. No scraping or soaking involved. It's not til they're on solids that you have to do anything with the poo. I figure I'll worry about that then! At first, you just throw them in the washer, do a cold rinse, hot wash, and double rinse ( ... )

Ours is HE and front loading, and I honestly sometimes wonder about our regular clothes and them being as clean as they should be...so I really worry about doing diapers! I don't even know how to "double rinse" or anything like that. I'll have to figure out how to use our washer/dryer properly, I guess. Matt wants to cloth diaper for the overall money savings but I'm starting to get nervous!
