Loved the Holmes movie...

but it was very much Guy-Ritchie-Does-Sherlock Holmes and not so much with the canon-having, was it?(I say that as a Ritchie fan...I'm not bitching, but it was as if there was some Film Director's Holmes Challenge and this was Guy's entry. I wish that was a thing...I'd love to see all the different takes.)

What wasn't canon having? Doped-up, slovenly Holmes is totally canon!

And actually? I went to see RDJ directed by Guy Ritchie much more than I went to see Sherlock Holmes :-D On my train trip for Thnksgiving, I watched both Iron Man and Rocka Rolla, so I was very in the mind for that combo!

Yeah, that's true... chicating December 28 2009, 03:33:21 UTC
It's not *outside* canon, just kind of on speed compared to your more PBS-ish Holmes interpretations. And I believe Irene Adler was a mezzosoprano in the Viennese opera or some such thing.
But I had a lot of fun and totally think "Madge" is crazy to let GR get away. I'd love a smart Brit with an eye for a caper, myself.

RocknRolla but I still thought it was awesome.

Lots of fun and slashy beyond belief, but also some missed opportunities, I think. I'm still not sure Guy Ritchie was the right director for this. I wish Sydney Pollack were still among us.

I remember him more as an actor, not his films.

He always seemed like a smart, decent guy, not prone to Walsh-style director 'tude.
I'm sure I saw a film of his, but I'm gonna have to visit imdb and refresh.
No offense to Mr. Pollack whom I would have liked to adopt me, probably.ETA: D'oh...he only made some classics: "Tootsie," and "The Way We Were," in particular are faves. But I've only recently started to pay attention to movies that way...yeah, he'd have brought a more heartfelt take on "Holmes"
