Venue Recommendations

Hi! I'm moving into the city for college after living in suburbia all my life. Once I get there I'll be going to DePaul, so I should be pretty much in the heart of the city! I'm very excited. I am especially interested in exploring some burlesque-styled clubs/music venues/etc. I'm also interested in perhaps seeing what a kink club might be like... ( Read more... )

I know Girlie-Q Burlesque does a lot of shows at Joie de Vine (a wine bar in Andersonville) and Mary's Attic (the upstairs of Hamburger Mary's, also in Andersonville). They'll only card you if you go to the bar and buy a drink.

Hamburger Mary also does a Charity Bingo every Monday, it's run by a drag queen and can get really raunchy with games like "Rimjob". You don't get carded and it's an amazingly awesome time.

I would definitely check out http://vaudezilla.com/. Every place that I have seen them, has been 21 and over...but they are doing "Rollin' Outta Here Naked: A Big Lebowski Burlesque" in September at the Greenhouse Theater.

If you are really interested in learning burlesque, Annie (from Vaudezilla) teaches classes on the north side of the city.

Also, if you like underground circuses...check out El Circo Cheapo.

Feel free to friend me, I wouldn't mind having someone to explore more of Chicago with! :)

Hahahah, that sounds fantastic.

It might be something I'd be interested in - right now my schedule is too full to take on an outside class, but if I gain some free time and money, I'll definitelly look into Annie!

El Circo Cheapo sounds great, especially since "cheap" is in the name. :P

I think I will! :D

El Circo is $10 on the first friday and saturday of every month. :) You can even ask for your money back after the show, but you won't want to!

That's insanely awesome! I checked their site and they said they're on hiatus until September - but I am DEFINITELY going to have to check that out!

There's the Belmont Burlesque at that little theater on Halsted and Belmont on the fourth Saturday of every month. Which is a great time and it's 18+. www.belmontburlesque.com (I think)

Also Rocky Horror at the Music Box on the third Saturday of every month.

ummmm.... I feel like there's something really obvious that I'm forgetting. If I remember, I'll reply again.

Awesome, thanks!
I have been planning to see Music Box's RHPS. I saw Wilmette's not long ago and really enjoyed it.

you're the one who made the absurd claim that hyde park is INCREDIBLY dangerous on that post that disappeared, right? well i did some research that i don't want to go to waste now that the post is gone...it really sets me off when people make that claim. have you even been there? ever? please stop making uninformed statements like that. it feeds the notion that the south side is a seedy, dark underbelly of the city, and the south side really needs people to go there, not avoid it because of absurd fearmongering ( ... )

Nah, I'm new to the community! I'm kind of o_O by the idea that I have the same icon - because my icon is of me.

Maybe I'm thinking of an older Chicago? I was talking to a friend of mine that went to UC the other day - but she went at about 10 years ago. She was telling me how scared she felt to leave the campus, how the one time she did she was, in her words, the only white girl in the area, and I guess a man came up to her and told her flat out "You don't belong here." and she went running. I guess I just had this in mind when I responded.

I'm not as personally familiar with the area, no (I'm much more accustomed with the north side of the city & the northern suburbs), I was just going off on what I'd heard from other people. Clearly I'm wrong, and I apologize - my evidence was purely anecdotal and not representative of actual facts. I shouldn't've made such a grand statement without doing my research.

thanks for being understanding...i'm sorry i ranted so much, i just get very touchy about this. i've heard it A LOT over the past 5 years. hyde park did used to be sketchier back in the day from what i've heard. you should check out the south side once you get in the city, though!

i've left hyde park and been the only white girl lots of times. it's not so bad..sure, you might feel out of place, and someone might tease you because you're an easy target, but i've never been harmed or threatened. i was indeed mugged in hyde park (not in the surrounding neighborhoods) but i was wasted in a park in the middle of the night. i could've been mugged anywhere like that. just use street smarts and you'll most likely be fine.

I don't think she would've felt a problem with it if she didn't feel like she was being directly threatened. :/ Coulda just been that person though, and again, it was a decade ago.
