Resale Shops, Used Clothing Stores

Jul 01, 2009 16:52

I ran into a woman on the bus the other day wearing the most beautiful dress. She said she got it for 8 bucks at a resale shop. It's made me that much more determined to stop paying so much for retail clothing. I checked the archives and was surprised to discover nothing there. Can anyone suggest their favorite haunts, especially those in/near Hyde ( Read more... )

I don't know any in the Hyde Park area but there are quite a few Unique and Village thrift stores on the south side. The two I am familiar with are in Back of the Yards (on Archer) and Bridgeport (on Halsted).

If you aren't the personality type for real thrifting (IE-frequent trip, often not finding anything special but sometime hitting a gold mine) you might want to check out a Ragstock, Buffalo Exchange or Plato's Closet.

There are tons of "vintage" and "designer consignment" options too. A collection of vintage clothing stores can be found on Belmont between Broadway and Halsted so it might be worth the trip if you can plug the meter and hit 5 or 6 stores in a single trip.

I was going to recommend Ragstock and Buffalo Exchange but it looks like someone already got to it c: They're not exactly thrifty-thrifting, well, per se. Buffalo Exchange has some really neat stuff and it's all second hand but they are a little on the more expensive thrifty side (cheaper than retail, but still expensive for being secondhand. They're in Wicker Park, I believe) and Ragstock (as well as Hollywood Mirror, both on Belmont) had a pretty interesting selection of quirky/retro/eclectic secondhand clothes that aren't exactly DIRT cheap, but still cheap.

There are a number of good shops in Pilsen off the 18th st Pink Line stop (you could do 55 to halsted bus, but that requires a sketchy wait in Englewood--I usually take the 6 downtown to the Pink Line and it takes just as long). Knee Deep Vintage is one that comes to mind.

Definitely not near Hyde Park, but I don't go anywhere else for my clothes but Plato's Closet in Lincoln Park. It's a resale shop that only accepts brand name clothing. I have Abercrombie tops that cost me 5 dollars and bought a pair of boots that everyone compliments me on... cost me 8 bucks! :D
