I kind of feel like it's block by block, and dependent on an individual's comfort level. I live in Logan Square, west of Kedzie, and I love where I'm at. Besides, neighborhoods are constantly evolving, and those hard and fast street boundaries you read about online may not apply anymore.
Have you checked out Everyblock? It's a pretty good way to get information about an area... not only crime statistics, but if anyone is building, what they're building, if people are buying or selling property, how much it's going for, etc.
Really you need to go down there and walk around and see if it is comfortable for you. Go at different times of the day. Try walking "home" from a nearby el or bus stop at night. Good luck with your search
