This may or may not have been asked before, I checked the tags and couldn't find anything.

I'm moving in to Lakeview in September and am looking to get a cat. I haven't decided whether to look for a pet store or to adopt. Any recommendations where to get a new pet?

There are so many pets available for adoption and probably many on craigslist as well....please do not buy pets from pet stores.

It's prohibited to advertise pets on craigslist and not recommended to shop for one there either. But I do second the recommendation to check out any one of the MANY shelters that have MANY MANY cats for adoption. Young, old, spunky or a couch potato - whatever you're looking for, you will find in a shelter and you will be saving a life. If you're buying from a pet store, you're just opening a spot for some backyard breeder to drop off more of it's litters.

You can also check petfinder.com - they'll give you a full list of every cat available, by age/sex/distance from many of the shelters and rescues in the area.

You can't sell pets on CL, but you can "rehome" them

Household pets of any kind including but not limited to dogs, cats, primates, cage birds, rodents, reptiles, amphibians, fish. Re-homing with small adoption fee OK

If you meant adopting from Petsmart when you said "pet stores" then that is a good idea along with PAWS, Anti-Cruelty etc.

Don't "buy" a cat from Petland or a place like that. You can adopt any age and breed of cat, there is no reason to support backyard breeders.

definitely go with one of the city's many, many shelters: harmony house, tree house (http://www.treehouseanimals.org/), etc etc etc.

petfinder.org will give you an idea of what's out there in the way of shelters and animals.

petsmart always has cats who need adopted.

my cats were adopted from felines, a cageless, no-kill shelter: http://www.felinesinc.org/

don't go to a petstore and buy a cat or kitten. adopt a cat that needs a home from a shelter.

PAWS Chicago has a beautiful adoption facility on Clybourn at Racine. The animals are treated like royalty, and thus are relaxed. I can't say enough good things about PAWS.

10000000% agree. i used to walk by there every weekend, just to look in the windows at the adorable kittens they had (i'm allergic, though...and my apartment didn't allow pets) :-( I would HIGHLY recommend PAWS.

or at the very least, definitely adopt. there are too many adoptable pets out there in shelters and whatnot (as someone said before--petfinder.com) to try to buy breeded or whatever.
