times are shitty, but i'm pretty sure they can't get much worse (i hear that)

fandomsecrets is pissing me off tonight. :/ There was a RENT secret, and it inspired a host of annoying-to-me comments from people who've never seen the show or movie, people who've seen the show or movie once and apparently didn't absorb anything beyond the music, and people who claim to be RENT fans but still get basic facts wrong, and I just kind of want to ( Read more... )

Lol. I guess I need to rewatch RENT.

Something random about me... Uh... I have an unhealthy obsession with Cary Shields and hopes Adam Pascal breaks his back again so I can see him as Roger? :p

Dude, Cary Shields is an awesome Roger. ♥ Nothing unhealthy about that.

I...kind of hope Adam and Anthony will just move on to other projects and let other people play Mark and Roger in general?

Dude, I don't get that either. The song's about not compromising your values in a crazy screwed-up world, HELLO METAPHOR.

(And dude, isn't Joanne a lawyer? Excuse me while I join you in your grumpiness.)

Random fact: I make a kick-ass tofu stir=fry

Yesss! Exactly. IT'S NOT EVEN A SUBTLE METAPHOR.

(Yes. Yes she is. *grumps at people who Don't Get It*)

That's awesome! I can't cook at all, so I am often Very Jealous of people who can.

Heh, I don't know if I'd consider it cooking, it's more "throw everything in a pan and heat until brown." ;) It never comes out the same way twice.

And BTW, I sent you more crossover. :D

There's a lot of backlash to RENT these days, it seems like. I wonder if it's that everyone who got clobbered over the head with it in high school is now taking the time to go, "FUCK THAT SHIT." (I understand that... I was the same way with ska for a while.)

I do get the feeling that Mark could go home any time he wanted, and possibly Roger, too, and it is kind of weird, in retrospect, that they had this deal where they could live rent-free, and I have no idea how Maureen's paying the bills, but Collins, Mimi and Joanne definitely have jobs, and Angel did what she could to get by.

I feel like what the first song is trying to convey is, "We are at the end of our ropes. There is no way, even with jobs, we could make up that much money. We are done dead professionally and creatively. Fuck it. JUST FUCK IT ALL." But I get how some people can get annoyed at it and take, "We don't wanna pay our fucking rent" from it instead ( ... )

Yeah...that's one of the reasons I'm ranting here instead of actually yelling at the fandomsecrets commenters.

I don't know. I know people who don't like RENT, but they mostly have understandable reasons? They don't like musicals. They don't like rock operas. They think the AIDS storyline is over the top. They can't sympathize with the characters. They think it's overly sentimental. If they hear Seasons Of Love one more time they're gonna kill someone. Things like that. The people who hate on the show for things that...aren't actually part of the show? They confuse and vex me a lot more.

I wonder if it's that everyone who got clobbered over the head with it in high school is now taking the time to go, "FUCK THAT SHIT."XD I'm pretty sure I wouldn't be able to blame them for that, if that's their reasoning. Overexposure against your will can poison you against anything ( ... )

Ooh I know! That secret pissed me off too! I almost commented, but I figured there would be people who would do it much more eloquently than I could.

Do you have a problem with loading the pictures on fandomsecrets? I have to keep reloading and I still miss five to ten of them each time because they won't load. (And I'm worried that my secrets will be ones that won't load and I won't know if they were posted or not.)

There wound up being a decent-sized handful of people commenting along the lines of "WTF no". And quoting bits of the script. And just generally explaining why the secret and the people agreeing with it were Wrong.

I was actually quite cheered up to find one comment thread with one commenter agreeing with the secret, a second commenter telling hir "no, what actually happens in the musical is this", and the original commenter going, "Huh, I only saw the movie once and didn't get that. Thank you, that makes more sense and I can appreciate it more now!" So that was good.

I haven't had that problem recently but I used to have it a lot when I was on a shakier connection. What you can do, if you're willing to take the time, is use "view page source" to find the address of the secrets that won't load and go check them out separately. It's tedious, but it spares your connection having to download them all at once.

Oh that is heart warming! Though I didn't think the movie was particularly unclear, but I knew and saw the stage production first.

I will do that! Tedious it may be, but my ego doesn't mind. My connection has been acting weird lately; I need to call SaskTel about it.

Also, I want to know where this perception that RENT is about a bunch of whiny artists who think they should be exempt from paying rent or working real jobs comes from. Because it's so obviously not.

Who said that? Idiots. That's all I have to really say. I'd be irritated about this, too. I get irritated with people who don't get other musicals I like and just say ignorant things about them. You have every right.

A lot of people. Most of whom seem to never have actually seen either the stage show or the film and are relying on fifthhand knowledge. And a bunch of them got called out on it and some of them even admitted they were wrong. But it pisses me off.

I can only imagine how I would feel if people got basic facts about Chess wrong, but so few people even know that show exists anyway and I can't imagine what facts they'd get wrong. So my favorite show is (presumably) safe for now!
