"High risk to re-offend"

Oct 20, 2006 14:59

The justice system in Canada is an absolute JOKE. Just now I saw a news update on how a man who was in jail for sexual assault (of children? I can't recall) just got released into the community and has a "high risk of re-offending". Why the HELL do they release high-risk people? Screw what sentence they got. If they can still re-offend upon release ( Read more... )

venting, news

I totally agree that the Canadian Justice system is just messed up. Since i learn it its really surprising how bad the system really is for almost every offence

The Canadian Justice system is clearly messed up, but I'm assuming this guy got out on parole. The problem with letting a prisoner out after spending the full term is that they can just leave y'know? Without parole I think. I'm not sure, but yeah. I don't think you can keep prisoners in longer than the time that they were sentenced to because that would clearly open up the doors for abuse on other people serving their sentences.

Abuse? Rights are a privilege dictated by society. Once you break the trust, you lose your rights. That's how it SHOULD be anyway. They should keep a strict leash on letting out people ONLY who have been certified to be okay. Or at least low-risk to reoffend. I mean obviously you can't REALLY trust these people because they can lie through their teeth, but still... I mean if a dude is clearly going to reoffend, it just seems like a waste of time to let him out. Then cops have to be paid to re-catch this guy, then he has to be re-tried, etc, etc. Such a waste.

No, not abuse for just sexual offenders, but abuse for other prisoners, that's what I meant. If you can just arbitrarily just extend someone's sentence it's going to be hard to maintain checks and balances in terms of power. Clearly, if a sexual offender is at a high risk of reoffending, that's bad. I'm clearly not disagreeing with that! And I think they SHOULD be kept in prison, but if their sentences are DONE, then I don't think the law should have the power to arbitrarily extend sentences. It's the whole debate of balancing the individual's right with the right of the whole. It's a debate that's been going on for well, ever.

I guess the solution here would be to just EXTEND prison sentences for sexual offenders. Sometimes I can't understand why the prison sentences are so short! Like the murderer who stabbed my former classmate got away with doing seven years.

(Apparently, there's a prisons and politics seminar at Queen's for fourth year! All this talk has made me want to take it)

ew, only 7 years? That's stupid. =( And that's also what I hate. The sentences completely don't reflect the suffering of the victim. It's like a spanking.

It's so sad that it's so true that they would rather let them go free were they know that they are gonna re offened but they cant do nothing about it so they let them go free that is what truly sucks because they get out then there are more victums and the previous ones are loiving in fear cause there tormentor is free roaming the streets and it trully is a joke the way or Justice system works .

its like with people who comit 1st degree murder its 25 years to life but they have a chance of parole after serving 1/3 for there sentence same with all other offenders so its like in 10 years they can be out if they get parole
