#22: Cradle (Babysitting, by chibinecco)

“Explain to me again why we bought this thing?” Kakashi asked poking the offending furniture with a wary finger as though the bits of wood and polish might come alive and attack him.

“I told you. We’re going to take care of Sakura’s baby while she’s on a mission to sand with Lee,” Iruka called from the other room where he was arranging supplements. “It’ll only be a month. We can do it; you’ll probably not even notice since you’ll be on your own missions.”

“Yeah, but why couldn’t she leave the baby with Ino and Chouji? She lives closer to them and at least one of them will be home all the time to keep an eye on it. I’ve got missions and you’ve got school. It’ll be really dangerous with it going with you to classes,” Kakashi said, wandering back into the kitchen.

“Sakura’s still mad at Ino and Chouji for… well I’m not exactly sure why, you know how stubborn she gets. Sasuke and Naruto will both be in and out of the village, and you can’t just go asking the Hokage to watch after your kid for a month even if you are practically her best friend, so we’re taking care of the baby. It’s not that big a deal. I’ve arranged something with all the teachers; we’re trading her around so she’s never actually with a class. She’s only with a teacher during their planning period.” Iruka shut the pantry now half filled with powdery substitutes carefully minding the frying pan hanging precariously from a hook on the door. “We’ll just have to live with it.”

“But Ruka, with her in the room with us how will we be able to… you know…?” Kakashi trailed off desperate puppy eyes in place complete with unshed tears and barely suppressed whimper. Iruka was completely unaffected.

“We won’t. The baby is more important than your insatiable libido and it’s only a month. You’ll live,” Iruka said curtly, moving to their shared bedroom to set up the blankets in the cradle. Kakashi followed desperately trying to find a way to sway his lover.

“Please Ruka. We’re in a peacetime. It’s unlikely I’m going to be away for more than a day or two at a time. Most night’s I’ll be back here with you. Can’t we at least put that in a different room?” Kakashi pleaded gesturing to the crib.

“No, with her in here we’ll be able to help her as quickly as possible if something goes wrong,” Iruka deadpanned smoothing the blankets over the small mattress. Kakashi glared at the back of his lover’s head.

“We’re both very competent ninja. The time it would take for either of us to notice and get to her if she were in a different room is only a fraction of a second more than if she were in here.” Kakashi was getting frustrated with his lover’s flimsy arguments. “Why do you really want her in here? You have some ulterior motive. I would be willing to over look it, if it didn’t take away my sex time, since it will… I demand an explanation.”

Iruka stiffened at the clipped tone of his boyfriend’s voice. He felt ashamed to admit as he whispered the reason so quietly even the jounin beside him couldn’t hear more than a few mumbles indicating speech was occurring. “Sorry, say that again.” Kakashi’s voice was softer now Iruka was cooperating.

Iruka sighed submitting to his secret becoming known. “I want to have the crib in here because…” Iruka paused. His inability to control the tone of his voice was worrisome considering he was a chuunin under only light pressure for information. “Because… we won’t ever be able to have a child of our own… I wanted to have the sensation as close as possible to what it would really be like.” Iruka sat on the edge of their bed staring ashamedly at his hands.

Kakashi joined him placing an arm around Iruka’s shoulders pulling the younger man against him in a loving hug. It was obvious to Kakashi that was most likely the case but hearing it from his lover’s lips just made his heart swell with genuine affection. “It’s alright; you can keep the baby in here.” Kakashi gently kissed a milk tea forehead through wispy unbound chocolate hair. “I always forget how much I love you, and then you do things like this.” Kakashi pulled the younger man close again trying his best to convey the emotions he couldn’t complete with words.

Iruka looked up at Kakashi through oddly tearing eyes. “I love you.”

“I know you do,” Kakashi said softly, leaning down to kiss the mouth he’d gladly give up for any length of time if it would grant the man it belonged to even just a moment of happiness.

Iruka sniffed mildly confused as to why his nose was running but mostly thankful for the older man whose arms he was wrapped in. Kakashi could be selfish at times and horny at others, but Iruka knew he’d always be able to rely on the man to comfort him when he needed it most. Iruka nuzzled his face into the jounin’s neck mumbling words further muffled to a point Kakashi could no longer hear again.

“I’m sorry, I didn’t hear you again.” Kakashi breathed deeply the sent of his lover’s tears. The sent always brought with it a bittersweet pleasure Kakashi equally loved and hated.

“I said:  We could move the cradle to the other room some nights if you like.” Iruka looked up into mismatched eyes and a pale clean-shaven face.

Kakashi smiled into the playful, mischievously grinning face he adored more than anything else in the world and smiled. “I’d like that very much.”
