~Chapter 1~ -Chapter 2-
Enoki choked and coughed. His lungs burned, and his chest hurt. He coughed again, forcing salt water and grit out. He gasped, his hands grasping at his throat as the harsh air scrapped against abused flesh. One last cough and he spat out the rest of the foreign fluids from his lungs.
Rubbing at his eyes, burning with salt and sand, Enoki sniffed looking around to gather his bearings. He rubbed at his eyes harder. They hurt, and he had no idea what had happened. On the verge of bursting into tears, cold and in pain, he heard a voice call from over the rocks, in the water. “Hey kid, you awake up there?”
Enoki looked out over the moonlit water as the merman leapt above the rocks again. Silver beads trailed his path as the blond fish-man flipped landing back in the water with a splash, hardly the grace from before.
Wiping his face, all thoughts of pain gone from his mind, Enoki scrabbled to the edge of the rock again. This time the merman emerged right away. “Wow.” Enoki gasped in awe.
The man sighed, clearly relieved, running a hand through his wet hair. “Thank Suijin you woke up. I was beginning to worry you wouldn’t.”
“Why wouldn’t I wake up?” Enoki asked with a little cough as he lay down on the rock to get closer.
“Just thought you might have drowned.” The man ducked under, swimming forward half a foot to readjust his wet hair back out of his face.
“What is drowned?” Enoki asked, puzzled.
“Don’t worry about it.” The merman said.
Enoki shrugged to get comfortable, lying against the rock. “My name’s Enoki, what’s yours?”
“Yondi.”
“Nice to meet you.” Enoki said nodding on every word, an obviously trained response. “What are you?” He asked again, shifting against the hard surface.
“I’m a merman.” Yondi said, lifting his tail out of the water for Enoki to examine.
Enoki leaned forward over the rocks to get a closer look.
“Careful.” Yondi swam forward as if to catch Enoki if he fell in. “Don’t want to fall again.”
Enoki scooted back obediently. “Does being a ‘mirmawn’ mean you’re a fish?”
Yondi laughed as Enoki cocked his head to the side in confusion. “I have a tail like a fish, but that’s it.” He smiled up at the boy.
“Oh…” Enoki thought hard for a moment. “Are you real?”
Yondi laughed again. “As real as the rock you’re sitting on.”
Enoki looked back as he heard a dog bark and a woman’s voice. He looked back down at his new friend. “Can I touch it?”
A light broke through the trees at the back end of the beach. Yondi looked up at it, frowning. “I think I should go. It was nice meeting you, Enoki.” He turned, ducking under the water and swimming away with one last splash of his tail.
“There you are.” The woman called out hurrying across the rocks toward Enoki. “I was so worried.” The dog barked, followed by three men.
Enoki sat up, turning to look at them. “Mommy.” He cried, clambering up and over to greet the woman, nearly seven months pregnant. “Mommy, Mommy, I saw a mirmawn.”
Enoki’s mother knelt as they came together, wrapping her arms around him. “That’s nice, sweetie. Are you wet? You know you shouldn’t go swimming on your own.”
“I didn’t, Mommy. I was throwing rocks, but this mirmawn came up and told me I shouldn’t throw rocks, then he swam away, and when I looked over the edge, I fell in; he saved me, and we talked, and then he told me he was a mirmawn, and it was really cool, mommy. He had a tail.” Enoki burbled excitedly. “Like a fish.” He grinned.
“That’s great, honey.” She ruffled Enoki’s hair affectionately. One of the men came up, closely followed by the dog who barreled into the two of them, barking and licking.
Enoki giggled, hugging both his mother and the dog. “Mommy, Mommy, when can I see another one?”
Enoki’s mother looked sadly from her son to the man behind her and back. “I don’t think you can honey, and you shouldn’t talk about it. Most people have never seen one… They might uh… get jealous.”
“Oh.” Enoki wilted.
“Seen one what?” The man behind her asked. He was tall and broad shouldered, even in the dim light old scars could be seen on his weathered skin.
“Nothing.” His mother hastened to stand up, supporting her stomach. “We should get home. It’s late, and I need to give him a bath.”
The man nodded, turning and calling to the rest of the search party. “We found him. He’s safe.”
The other men groaned, turning their lanterns back on the small fishing village and ambling away.
“Do you need any help ma’am?” The big man asked, kneeling to pull the excited dog off Enoki.
“No, we’re fine. Thank you for your help.” She gave a short half bow.
Enoki looked between the two of them. “Mommy? Who’s that?”
Enoki’s mother looked down. “He’s a friend. He helped me find you.” She smiled, taking Enoki’s hand to lead him back home. “Thank you” she said again.
The man nodded, holding his lantern up for them to see by as they walked back to the village together before parting ways.
