Planning Ahead and Ruminations on Gender

I've been up since about 8, working pretty hard on getting some stuff together for The Great Couch Happening of '69. Not only have I put down the groundwork for a 'Definitive Guide' to Whitbrook, the town in which my novel begins and ends, but I've begun to compile an extensive list of crucial tasks that I need to complete to make my book as good ( Read more... )

I think that's one of the perils of fiction - you have a clear vision in your head, and then you read about feminism and racism etc. and think, 'hang on, what I know about these subjects isn't reflected in my work.' But by that point, it's very hard to rewrite your characters, because they exist in the way you imagined them.

I think it's always worth considering and looking into, even if you decide against it afterall. But if your characters exist as more than *male character* and *female character* (which I'm sure they do) then it's all good, I reckon :)

Due to the likelihood that I'll be taking a year off after September, I'm thinking of offering my services as proofreader/editor for people (free of course). If you ever want to send me anything to look through, I can read your work and let you know how your characters etc. come across, if that would help.

And of course the issue with heavily rewriting a character when most or all of the draft is done is that it can have a knock-on effect, altering the outcome of many events xD So as it is I think I might just let my characters develop naturally for now, letting my newfound awareness of these issues influence how things go. It might even give characters more potential for development!

I warn you, it's going to be a very long and complicated book :P Thanks very much for your offer, though. I've been wondering who I could turn to for proofreading when it's finally done, and I know I could trust you to be honest and amazing as always :)

I hope the rest on your year off will do you good <3

Exactly :p yeah, I think you're right to do that. I think the temptation is sometimes to force things, and you come to regret it later!

No worries, I'd be glad to! And thank you :) And yeah, so do I! I definitely need it.

Hope things are good for you <3
