This is very far indeed from being crap! :-)

I love the notion of a writer's characters being rather like ghosts, or being semi-real, or being a sort of simulated life.

You definitely have the knack of making your words count - you don't waffle or overdo things. Many people fail at this (I fear I am one of them!).

I think it reads well in the past tense, not sure it needs to be in the present tense. Maybe you could try it as a 2nd person narrative rather than 1st person, might work with the idea of the character being manipulated/controlled/subject to another's agency. The only thing I'd definitely change (if it were my story) would be to make 'they' into 'he' or 'she' (having said that, I'm guessing you want the writer's gender to be ambiguous, and this is just grammar-nitpickery really!).
