So I've had my first shoplifter experience. Kind of.

Right. My computer, I think, is now clean. I've had a decent sleep, and all is well with the world. The writing's going alright, I still love my job, I haven't come down with the flu... life is good!

Tomorrow I sign on, again at St. Helens. It's a buggerance enough doing it at the Newton office, I must admit; I hate the feeling of scrutiny I ( Read more... )

I say local; it's sort of local. It's back in St. Helens (where I used to live), which is the next town, but it's £4 on the bus there and back which means I can't afford to go very often. Once every two weeks is alright, because he gets in some new stock by then :)

I bought 'Rocket Cottage' because I looked at the line-up and vaguely recognised Maddy Prior, but I couldn't remember where from. Upon listening I realised she did some vocals for Mike Oldfield, most notably the absolutely beautiful song which closes his Incantations album. You can't exactly fail to notice her voice, it's so distinct. And bloody marvellous, as well :D

This shop's great because for most vinyls (i.e. ones that aren't collectors' editions, etc) range in price between £2 and £8. It's just pot luck on what he's actually got in at any given time :)

The only music I grew up with was Mike Oldfield, Queen, The Beatles and the Shadows. My Dad didn't really have a wide taste in music. But it was Mike Oldfield who put me on to David Bedford, who put me on to Kevin Ayers, who put me on to Soft Machine and Caravan... it's Mike Oldfield who started my whole musical adventure :D

I think Maddy Prior's done quite a lot of work outside of Steeleye Span. I recall reading somewhere that she had a vast body of work, because she did a bit of work as a session musician, and a whole load of solo. A quick scuttle over to Wikipedia tells me she recorded 'Happy Families' with Rick Kemp, who I've never heard of. I'm chuffed she's got so much out there - that means there's more music waiting to be unearthed :D

'But chances are that there's something you like? ' - Aye, but if I see names that I don't recognise (such as Steeleye Span, when I bought 'Rocket Cottage'), I'll be a risk-taker and give 'em a go. Generally I'm pretty good when it comes to picking vinyls in this way. I haven't picked a bad one ( ... )
