Dir en grey live in Dallas, TX

Dir en grey - All Visible Things - Trees - Dallas TX - 11/03/09
aka OH YEAH THE WAIT WAS WORTH IT

Let me start off by saying I intended on going to see Miyavi, staying the night in a motel, and showing up early to get in line to see Dir en grey, unfortunately Miyavi canceled and my original ride (MEGAN give me my pictures) ended up having work (etc.) until 3:30. Thankfully my mother offered to drop me off after she got home from work. We ended up leaving around 1PM and getting terribly lost, arriving at 5.

THE LINE

My place in line was directly after their (ugly orange) tour bus and I had an amazing view of Die sneaking in and out of it many times during our wait. XD I was amazed no one seemed to notice, but he was wearing a hat that covered his eyes and a flannel looking jacket before the live.
Someone seemed to be watching the news in there… Not very important, but I found it pretty funny.

On the way back to the car to get my water I was able to watch through the back door a bit to see Shinya during their warm up. They had closed the door by the time I went back a second time.

About an hour or half an hour before the doors opened some asian guy (couldn’t tell who) was hanging out of the third story window of the pizza place we were next to, throwing down what I think was candy and bags of junk food down at fans and taking pictures. I was a bit too far up the line to know what was going on, but I saw the guy and continued hearing “I WANT CANDY” being shouted.

Megan and co. ended up showing up about five minutes before the doors opened, and she was a lucky bitch because the line got three times longer after I got there and continued growing for what I assume was a little less than an hour after we were in.

THE WAIT

At 7PM the doors opened. The line ahead of us went pretty fast. 16 and 17-year-olds needed parents to accompany them, and us 18-20 year olds were forced to pay $5 before entering, apparently to make up for lost profits from alcohol.

We immediately went to Die’s side of the stage, about four people behind the front and began waiting as the room was slowly filling. After a while we began talking to the two girls in front of us, who I remember catching a glimpse of at Inward Scream in Dallas. It made the wait seem a little faster, but as an hour passed people began getting pissed. Someone had mentioned that the poster said something about there being a “special guest” which we never saw, so I’ll just assume it was me! :D

Suddenly during the first hour of waiting, all the lights went out and there was some flashing and the room began screaming and chanting, everyone got excited and ready to get it started. Until the lights came back on. Because they like to mess with us, I guess. They had hours to prepare, and they were just now fixing the stage and lights…

The really odd CD they were playing started over again, and the lights went out again after around the first hour and 45 minutes, they stayed off. Then they flashed once and stayed off again. I swear they were doing it to be funny. Shortly after they began tuning Toshiya’s bass for a bit. More cheers for nothing exciting, et cetera.

More than two hours passed and it was about 9:15PM, no opening band, everyone was getting pissed. People who weren’t fans that came with their friends continued asking if they could leave, and then all the sudden I look up at the balcony where the parents were standing and what do I see? Dir en grey finally entering the stage! The entire room broke out in screams and terrible chants. I learned two years ago during Inward Scream that Texans were bad at cheering.

THE LIVE

We waited another short eternity until finally the curtains opened as Sa Bir began to play. They filed out one by one as they always do, each time screams getting louder and once Kyo appeared the real shoving began.

By the time they began playing, we were three people away from the stage, so before the show I told Megan “Keep pushing me forward and I will get us to the front!” which she did, whether it was on purpose or not. And after fighting my way around a really tall guy and/or girl with annoyingly long hair I was able to grab hold of one of the plastic boxes (not sure what they are) which were bolted to the stage and had handles, so being as small as I am I had an easy time pulling myself against the stage. Before the first couple of songs were over I was able to scoot my way closer to Die’s side, letting her right next to me, staying against the stage for the entire show, right between Kyo and Die. She was able to get amazing pictures and videos on her cell which she still needs to send me!! Ahem.
Even if I got what I think was the best possible spot in the room, I’m paying for it now. My entire body aches and I ended up on my toes the entire time from being pushed so hard into the stage, my feet couldn’t fully touch the ground for more than 30 seconds.

During the intermission the fans went between chanting “Dir en grey” and “encore” horribly.

THE MEMBERS

Die has been the most entertaining person to watch in the past three lives I’ve been to. The entire time he smiles and nods at fans, licking his lips and shouting as if to challenge us. He probably got the most love and the most fans worked up overall. He’s amazing during lives and give fan his full attention and I’m very glad I ended up in front on his side again.
He spent almost the entire show at the very front of the stage (which was small to begin with) within our reach. After a while he stayed still for a short time so we could touch his guitar. I’m embarrassed and excited to say I rubbed his knee for good luck and touched his hand as he was playing. XD Bad idea, but hey, he didn’t move. I felt a little bad for my poor Megan because she’s such a Die fan girl and I hogged him from her. =P
After they finished playing he dumped water on us, like always. I straightened my hair and made it look all nice to see them, but my entire head got soaked!! Not that it didn’t feel nice, I was dying of heat.
He definitely made my night. He completely dug all of the attention, and he got a lot of it.
Was it just me, or did it look like he was flirting with his bearded roadie?!

Shinya I only caught a few glances of. But every time I looked over he was pounding away at his drums like a mad man. Each time I see him live I’m amazed. Hearing it and seeing it are definitely very different. If you like hearing him play you probably like seeing him play ten times more.
After they finished, he threw two drum sticks and went directly off stage, as always. )=

Kaoru WAS BEHIND A TREE!!!! The place is called Trees after all. There was a pole made to look like a tree on the stage and I could barely see him around it! He didn’t even come over to see us on Die’s side until they were finished playing, but when he did the entire side got louder that I think I heard it all night! He threw his hands up in his Kaoru fashion and Megan and I took our only opportunity to rub Kaoru’s boot, just like I did with Die’s knee. For post-good luck I suppose. XD

Toshiya was adorable! He wore his “kilt-skirt” and stretchy, tight pants again. Megan mentioned to me on the way home that she was happy to see his hair was growing back, lawl. He came over to our side twice during the show and once after, and every time he did all attention was on him, like a true rock star, no matter how huggable he looks. Once while he came over to us I got to feel up his leg, and let me tell you, he has nice ankles. That’s about it with my molesting them, as I said I’m a bit embarrassed, but mostly satisfied. |D
His backup vocals still sound like dog barks that make me giggle like a little girl when I see them come out of him.
Thankfully he also threw water on us before he threw his picks. By the time they were gone I grabbed Megan’s hand a put it on my head to show her how wet my hair was.

Kyo always leaves me speechless. He’s a very powerful performer in person and puts everything into the lives I’ve been to. Armed with his Calvin’s and a leather jacket without a shirt, he didn’t fail to impress me.
Excuse me if I go into fan girl mode, but damn! Did you know Kyo would probably be great at pop&locking? His dancing consisted of lots of it and air humping once or twice. No self mutilation, which I’m not sad to miss.
The jacket never came off, which I’m shocked about, since he always ends up shirtless somehow. But we got a great view or his chest. <3 I didn’t see the six-pack, but his belly’s still as flat and pokeable as ever, and the tattoos looked amazing. His hair was also amazing, not crazy and usual, very straight and a very nice style. No, he does not look as old and crazy in person as he has in recent pictures.
Around the middle of the live he spat nice, cool water on us. My parents think I’m crazy for liking it, but it was hot!! Is that so wrong?
He yelled “Last song!” once before they began to play and once the music stopped I looked away for a split second and he vanished before my very eyes! I always knew he was swift like a ninja.

THE unSETLIST
NOTE: These are not in order of which they were played, and mind you, I was up against speakers and I had an extremely hard time hearing, if I’ve missed any songs, or maybe misheard one or two, please let me know.

Agitated Screams of Maggots
Us Americans love this song, everyone screamed along, especially to “I’ll rape your daughter”

The Final
This was probably the most powerful song of the night. Everyone who knew the song sang along and Kyo kept prompting us to sing with him louder.

Glass Skin (JP)
This song was about as good as The Final, the fans singing along, but maybe just a little less strongly.

Inconvenient Ideal
This is my favorite song off of Uroboros and I was hoping I would get to hear it, and they delivered much more than I expected.

Merciless Cult
Toshiya’s barking was adorable. That is all.

Obscure
This song was amazing during Inward Scream, but I’m a little thankful there was a lot less moshing this time around.

Red Soil
I could barely tell which song this was from being unable to hear the singing over everything else until the heavy guitars kicked in. Then it was head banging time.

Shokubeni
This is my ultimate favorite song to see live! When the music stops playing and Kyo screams away from the microphone is an image I’ll never forget, and I had an amazing view and chance to hear it up close.

Stuck Man
I feel the same about this song as Red Soil, I couldn’t hear any singing, but the music blew me away and I was reminded why these are my favorite people to see in person.

Toguro
Megan danced around like a happy little pansy for her favorite song. XD

HYDRA -666-
Holy crap! I never thought I would EVER hear this preformed, but it was one of the best songs for me that night! I even forgot it existed for a few months, but it was insanely fun to scream “I will feel pity for you”

Reiketsu Nariseba
Right? I’m not wrong this was playing? The heavier songs were VERY hard to tell apart for me.

Vinushka
I have a hard time sitting down and listening to Vinushka, but WHOA it was the perfect song for them to always start lives with, and now I see why.

Repetition of Hatred
They played very few songs from Marrow, but I feel they performance they gave in this song made up for it.

Two a cappella’s from Kyo
At first the crowd began screaming, but once it died down it they stayed pretty silent and the club was filled with his chanting and growling and strange noises I never knew he could make.

Overall this tops the other lives I’ve been to and I still can’t believe I got the change to see it, as sappy as that sounds.

toguro, agitated screams of maggots, shokubeni, glass skin, repetition of hatred, vinushka, stuck man, hydra -666-, the final, obscure, merciless cult, reiketsu nariseba, live review, dallas, red soil, inconvenient ideal, dir en grey
