My Neighborhood

I take different routes at different times and today we happened to walk past a certain corner around 7:45.  This is the location of a school which I think is run as an adjunct to a synagogue.  It's a secular school with a summer program -- I recall that several years ago First Daughter went here for a few weeks when the public school teachers were ( Read more... )

Are McCain, Obama or their respective spouses in your area today? I see Obama's supposed to be in Missouri at least part of the day.

The motorcade you describe sounds just like the Edwards caravan that nearly ran me over at an intersection four years ago. I don't know why the black SUV seems to be the candidate vehicle of choice these days.

Oh yeah -- or the Resident, or sub-Resident, or their respective spouses.

The Democratic Leadership Council is meeting in CHI today, I think. I don't think Obama's attending and I don't know who in that group would rate a motorcade and a public appearance at a school.

I'm not trying to be coy here. Obama lives in my neighborhood. His wife is on leave of absence from my employer. I have stood next to him in line at Walgreens. I am assuming his kids are attending this particular school this summer, and if I were one of the neighbors I'd be hunkering down for the duration.

Well well. I did not know that. I, too, have to wonder why all the foofaraw to get the kids to school. In fact, it seems somewhat counterproductive -- multiple vehicles and security dudes would, to me, suggest one of the parents is in the house and would therefore raise the security risk. I mean, I know the Obamas have two kids and roughly their ages, but I wouldn't be able to pick them out of a passel of kids.

I know there are arguments to be made in favor of it, but I am personally just so over the outrageous levels of security precautions we feel obliged to take for every bloody thing any more. Sometimes I feel like painting targets on my chest and back and saying, "Take me first! Get it over with!"
