Weird food thing

This is kind of strange. For almost 8 months I've been eating 4 servings of vegetables and 3 servings of fruit each and every day, like you're supposed to but very few people do. So my research is pretty extensive. I discovered a new vegetable, broccolini, which is tasty and cool. I have my likes and dislikes but I try different things. I've always ( Read more... )

Allergies to pineapple are not uncommon, and the instant response sounds like either an allergy or a chemical reaction.

The problem with pineapple and jello isn't the acidity, it's that it contains enzymes that break down protins - we use them in the lab sometimes. Eating too much pineapple can leave one's mouth raw because the enzymes digest it. But the instant reaction here either means hypersensitivity to the enzymes, potentially as a side effect of something, or else allergy. I don't know of anything that will sensitize to the enzymes, though that doesn't mean there isn't something, but my guess is allergy.

But it's just a guess.

I'm wondering if there was heavy pesticide residue on that pineapple. Maybe try organic pineapple and see if the same thing happens? Do you know its country of origin?

pineapple has the enzyme bromelain in it, which breaks down proteins, which is why it is so good at tenderizing meat. Your mouth can become sore if you eat too much at one time, or if your mouth is already irritated from something else, it will REALLY be sore after eating pineapple. I have a friend who lived in the Phillipines, and said you could tell when the pineapples were ripe because the locals all had a rash around their mouths and down their chin... if you really miss it you might be able to eat canned pineapple..not the same but better than nothing...
