Halloween Party | Book Notes: Sandra Lee Semi-Homemade: 20-minute meals 2

Last night's Halloween party hosted by my friends was great. I did end up going as Dorothy from The Wizard of Oz, complete with ruby red slippers, blue dress, swept back hair, and a small basket with a Toto plushie nesting inside.

My friends' house was spookily decorated like the cave of the three witches from Macbeth. There were lots of bubbling ( Read more... )

I agree with you on the subject of Sandra Lee. I like the premise that it is possible to put together some really lovely meals and events without being a caterer. But I don't care for her show, either. Like you, I feel she tries way too hard and, frankly, some of her kitchen practices scare me. The flowy sleeves around the stove really make me nervous. Also, some of her knife action makes me cringe. I know she is actually well trained but YIKES! IMHO, if you are showing people how to cook either by book or on television (or whatever medium you choose), you need to show genuine caution and kitchen safety. People aren't always careful of such things but if they see good practices (or even uber good practices) modeled, there is a fighting chance that they will make similar efforts ( ... )

Re: SL's knife skills and kitchen. This is a particular peeve of mine since her show seems to be geared to people who don't have much experience cooking. Some might pick up her bad habits and injure themselves.

As for RR, I think she's even more annoying, and I can't stand how she grabs armfuls of stuff either. It's an accident waiting to happen. I imagine she has had many armload accidents on her set, but they are all carefully edited out.

I don't think you're being paranoid when it comes to kitchen safety. You're teaching The Boy good basic skills that will serve him well as progresses to more complicated dishes.

I missed this post in my rush that last time I was logged into LJ. What a great party! Feasting on brains! Nom-nom-nom!

*laughs* Quite. The hosts had signs by the platters of food announcing what is was. The brains were yummy!

We're off to see the Wizard, the wonderful Wizard of Oz, because because because beacause, beacause of the wonderful work he does. I adore that musical! Glad you had fun. :)

Look at me, I'm Sandra Lee! Sorry, I couldn't resist the Grease reference. I agree. Some of her ideas are good, but she's far too irritating for me to watch.

I love that show too, but now I'm going to have that song stuck in my head. :P

Look at me, I'm Sandra Dee
Lousy with virginity
Won't go to bed
Til I'm legaglly wed
I can't, I'm Sandra Dee

Watch it. Hey, I'm Doris Day
I was not brought up that way
Won't come across
Even Rock Hudson lost
his heart to Doris Day

I don't drink, I don't swear, I don't rat my hair
I get ill from one cigarette (cough, cough, cough)
Keep your filthy paws
off my silky drawers
Would you pull that stuff with Annette?

*laughs* Now I have that song stuck in my head. Thanks, Mags, thanks a lot! :P

Their parties are always awesome and it's great they continue to do this yearly. What will they come up with next?

Pink strawberry popcorn? :::GAGS::: How is that made?

I look forward to their next Halloween party. :D

You melt the shortening and mix it with pink strawberry Koolaid. Fold in the popcorn and there you go. It does not sound very appetizing at all.

I saw the pics the other day. You guys all looked so cute and the house was scarily festive. Being sick over the weekend really sucked. I would have wanted to be there. Thanks to you, Mat, Claw, and Marissa for bringing me chicken soup and some of the "brains" and "mummy fingers" food from the party.
