I was trying to explain sororities to my daughters about a month ago when we went to a dance production on campus. It was surprisingly hard to get from the pretty houses with manicured lawns to anything resembling a truth. I enjoyed this! It's nice to read about an experience other than mine where I once called 911 because of scary hazing I could see from my apartment.

I didn't really have much association with many fraternities/sororities. I knew a few Gammas when I was at Geneseo, though. It seems that their membership overlapped GAGG's membership in a bunch of cases. They were good people.

I was one of the not-quite-founding, but second-wave GAGGites. And yes, there was a lot of overlap then, too. :)

I would totally have paid for friends like that. It so depends on the school, IMO. At my college, sororities and fraternities were super snotty. At my best guy friend's school, fraternities ran the gamut (and sororities were near-nonexistent because it was Georgia Tech, lol).

That does change the dynamic, now doesn't it? Geneseo was about 65/35 female/male when I was there.

I love the idea of the family you choose. This bunch sounds imaginative and creative!

We had an alt!Greek group in college. Alpha Beta Pie. You were only required to go into an Alpha Beta grocers and steal a pie to share with the rest. Punk rock philosophers and literary geeks, the lot. We held our meetings at the on-campus pub.
