*hugs* Ouch. And yeah -- always the wonder, what if there was something else that could have been done. I'm glad it did heal up well enough, though.

Yeah...that same side has been susceptible to sprains and has developed all kinds of other annoying problems over the years - heel spurs, a bunion on my big toe, and bursitis on my hip. Not comfortable.

I like the scar as metaphor for the crack; there was also a sense of it as a dividing line in your life as well as you hand.

I agree about being lucky not to get an infection. But when you don't have the money, it's easy to minimize a possibility like that away.

I tripped on a crack in the sidewalk at night while running in college. My left hand helped break my fall in the grass... but pulled my little finger to where I lost most of the grip (not good when you're a violin major). I wound up at the sports medicine center, where the guy who ran it wanted to know why so many musicians were clogging up his facilities!

Falls are the worst, because you have so much time to think in that second it takes you to hit the ground, but not a lot of time to do anything about it.

What a painful but necessary lesson. I have one of those on my hand as well, about where you do. I slipped on ice, and didn't want to fall on my guide dog, so I fell on the hand instead and the ice cut it pretty badly. Falling on a crack or ice, it's still a lesson to walk slower.

Slower and more cautiously, definitely.
