Hey would it be okay if I asked you a few questions about the MSW at Albany sometime? I'm applying for MSW programs for next year, and that's one I'm looking at and I'm curious what you think of it.

Sure! Bear in mind that I'm a part-timer, so I've completed all of two classes there, and that I'm a joint MSW/PhD student, but I'll try to help. :)

What I can tell you so far:

- The School of Social Welfare itself is very good. UAlbany as an institution, not so much. The bureaucracy is truly obnoxious.
- If you're interested in working with children and families, with the elderly, or with the LGBTQ population, the program is particularly good. Also good if you're interested in macro practice.
- If you can afford it, go full-time. It's do-able as a part-timer but more difficult. You will not be able to maintain a full-time day job and do this program unless you have three years of human services work experience and your employer lets you arrange a work-study placement, and even then you'll probably have to reduce your work schedule or take a leave of absence to do your second field placement. You'll also have more freedom for electives ( ... )

Thanks. That actually helps a bit. I'm looking to work with children and families, either CPS or school social work primarily is what I'd like to do. I'm probably looking to maintain a part time job but not full time, do you think that would be do-able? I'll work full time in summers and save up, but during school part time will be just fine for me, I think. Also, do you know what if anything they have as far as scholarships/financial aid? I think I'm going to be visiting the school and talking to someone over my winter break, but it's nice to have a bit of information going into that.

As far as a job goes, ideally for first year (fall and spring) you'd have Monday and Tuesday 8:30-5 clear for field and second year (fall and spring) you'd have Thursday and Friday 8:30-5 clear, so flexibility to work around that is what you need.

Financial aid is the standard stuff, plus I think there are a few special scholarship programs but I don't remember off the top of my head what they are.
