omg I felt like such an asshole because I was like holding in my laughter and then they showed Dean Thomas's face and I totally lost it and was like obnoxiously shrieking and everyone else was just like, "umm"
(but lol fuck u Kloves for consistently screwing over Ron) UM THIS SO MUCH. There was some quote from Jo in Entertainment Weekly about how she was nervous when she first met him because he was the person who was going to "butcher [her] baby" and she asked who his fave character was and was sure he was going to say Ron, but was pleasantly surprised when he said Hermione. YEAH, WELL, THAT SURE DIDN'T WORK OUT TOO NICELY. >___________< He's just comic relief ALL THE TIME and his bromance with Harry gets overshadowed and UGH, NOT COOL.
I. KNOW. RIGHT. And like, don't get me wrong, I absolutely adore Hermione. Without her, they would have all probably died in the first book. But Ron is Harry's best friend, and the movies make it seem like Hermione is Harry's BFF/future girlfriend. I hated, hated when Harry was telling them he was going to the Forest and Hermione starts crying and says, "I'm going with you" and Ron's in the background like, "lol I'm not." And don't even get me started on the end of HBP when Harry and Hermione are in the Astronomy Tower and talking and the camera pans back to see Ron... sulking in the background. I can't, Kloves, I can fucking not.
This is one of my favorite pro-Ron things ever and perfectly discusses how badly the movies fuck him over and this is just some more fabulous pro-Ron stuff.
Oh, so do I! Believe me, Harry/Hermione is a wonderful friendship, and I basically have a Harry to my Hermione and I love him to bits and that's all lovely--but, like, non-romantic friendships ACTUALLY HAVE MEANING TOO. Some movies and fandoms kinda don't seem to get that. I loved Hermione says "I'll go with you" because it showed how much she loved him--but then it's ruined by Ron just chillin' in the background like he doesn't care when we know that he REALLY REALLY does. Fucking good point about him being his Wheezy and all! And let's not forget that moment in OotP when Harry walks in on the boggart and sees dead Ron! It's Mrs. Weasley's boggart, to be fair, but he still freaks out and goes cold and has a heart attack for a second--as did I, believe me--and I also adore the scene after Ron destroys the locket when they hug and talk and stuff...so of course that moment is just turned into a comic button on the whole crazy Riddle!Harry/Hermione makeout scene. GREAT, THANKS.
NO YES EXACTLY. I don't understand why romantic love is seen as stronger than platonic love at all, but it's annoying, ESPECIALLY in a fandom like Harry Potter where one of the central themes is friendship. And ugh, Hermione killed me when she was like, "I'll go with you" because that really is SUCH a Hermione thing to do but it is also a Ron thing to do. And great point about him going cold and freaking out when he sees Mrs Weasley's Boggart. And lol the locket scene. :( So much wasted potential. The movies really do a terrible job at the Harry/Ron friendship and almost make it seem like Hermione is the "glue" of the trio and like Harry and Ron only like/tolerate each other because of her.
NGL, Katie Bell's expression was my fave. And Lucius keeps trying to find the right moment to interupt, God. *Snickers*
There were definitely things I missed. I feel like they didn't cut as much as I expected them too but they cut THE WRONG STUFF. Also, they totes effed up Neville's moment of glory. If he'd just been allowed to kill Nagini right away like in the books then that would be like, ten minutes they could have used to do The Prince's Tale properly or have Dumbedore mention his gay Victorian lover or SOMETHING.
Also, also, I found the way they did the Great Hall confrontation super effective with Harry back in his Gryffindor robes stepping out to face Snape but I really wish we could have seen Ravenclaw Tower. :(
I actually think that the Prince's Tale was beautifully shot in aesthetic terms but they dropped the ball on the narrative by cutting ALL THE SCENES that gave Snape and Lily any real complexity and completely muddying the waters.
