Ruby asked me to compile a short list of Manic Street Preachers songs with which to introduce a new listener to their oeuvre. It was a bit difficult knowing where to begin, but assuming the songs should be spread fairly equally across their career, I may have whittled the list down to a reasonable amount ( Read more... )

This is making me want to go dig out all my Manics CDs, which I'm not sure I will ever find. Ooooh, Spotify! Yay! Ahem.

Do you rate their version of the MASH theme at all, or do I just love the movie so much that it makes me like the song?

That was the biggest obvious omission from the 20, but since it's a cover version I decided it was OK to leave out. I love it a lot. (It was for charity, too.)

I will indeed, thank you! :) (I have lots of CDs, but they're all in boxes still from my place in NYC, and there are so damn many boxes full of god only knows what ... )

That's fabulous, thank you! (I'm so glad you included Sleepflower, I think that's my total favourite.) We have everything on CD up to and including Know Your Enemy and, like Martha, I am now planning on digging them out and re-listening :)

(Lololol of course you do; Sleepflower is the all-time metalhead's MSP favourite! They still have to play it live due to popular demand; James used to abuse the audience e.g. "Yeah, now we've played you that chunk of soft metal shit..." because as usual he is far too self-critical, but I think now they've just accepted that the crowd love it.)

You have! You must read all the posts I have made while you've been away. Shall I ask how you are? Is there any chance of an answer other than "doom, gloom, death and destruction"? *Ducks*
