Interesting article about the emerging so-called Homo Obeseus. It puts forward the idea that the typical western diet is screwing us over by sending signals to our DNA to turn us into a "species" unable to cope with inflammation or balance our own metabolisms ( Read more... )

I feel your pain there. I tried for a while to 'substitute' and realized, you just can't. While ground pinenuts have a vaguely Parmesan-y taste, they are not I just found I had to explore other options and really learn to use my spices and coconut milk and cream in my cooking and other things.

Good luck.

It's further complicated, of course, by most schools being nut-free, due to widespread allergies. I could easily get my younger one to eat lots of PB, and the older one loves pine nuts and all, regardless of trying to use them as a substitute.

I think I could make some milage with cocnut milk/cream though... > thoughtful

So they are banned from even bringing nuts to the school?

You can also get a lot of mileage out of vegannaise . They have a regular one and then there is one that is a little more intense they make out of grape seed oil. They are both awesome. I make ranch dressing with it, almond milk, and then a variety of spices and such. You can make an awesome cream sauce with it as well. And I also happen to like tofutti cream cheese. Although it has carageenan in it, which isn't ideal, and typically I try to avoid tofu too, but I really this stuff. So you can mix it with some vegannaise and you have an awesome sauce. I have browned chicken and then made a sauce for it that way for phawkwood he really liked it.

I already use the Tofutti cream cheese and sour cream substitutes sometimes for myself. They are not bad. I have to go shopping at a specific store to find it, and it's the kind of thing that keeps a long time, which is both good and bad, but there you go. I've been using soft tofu to make creamy dressing sometimes (peppercorn or ranch), but I will look into veganaise instead/in addition.

If you need product recommendations, just ask! I have been happily and deliciously vegan for almost 12 years! :)

I'm debating different vegan cookbooks at the moment: would you recommend I start with Vegonomican, Vegan with a Vengance, or something else?

I wish I could sympathize. But I love dairy, and am highly skeptical of ANY dietary claims at the present time. (I am fully convinced that one day they will define us as still in the "barbaric" stage of medicine.)

That's a very interesting article. When I am not laid up because of this broken ankle/leg we work out a lot at the gym and need to take in a fair amount of protein to build back up the muscle used to lift weights and such. We tend to do so with whey protein as a substitute but you are right that is still in the dairy category. Hmm... now I'm pondering this concept of less dairy as well. Will be interesting to watch your journey with it.

I wish that guy (and the doctor who quotes him) didn't feel he had to misuse scientific terminology to sensationalize things. There's enough misinformation and disinformation out there about evolution and speciation already. What a maroon.

Agreed, but I do also think the inflammation issue is a large one.

Inflammation is not heritable, and will not result in speciation.

That said, I'm pretty sure (from what little I can pick out) that Chaldakov isn't a Lysenkoist, and I suspect he doesn't actually use the "evolving into another species" claim. I don't know how reputable he is or is not; it's difficult to guess for Former Eastern Bloc researchers, and he's in Bulgaria. You get a wide range.

I don't know whether the doctor whose website that is thinks it's speciation or not.
