Wow, that turned my brain inside out. I'm still not sure how I see the sentence as grammatically viable without the use of the word "that."

yeah. I studied linguistics in school, and I agree that it's barely grammatical without the 'that.' I had to look at the explanation to make any sense of it at all.

'Buffalo bison Buffalo bison bully bully Buffalo bison' helped. Once I got through the explanation, I got it. It would probably be a lot easier to get if you heard someone read it aloud to you, with the emphases in the right places.
