Meal: Pan-seared flank steak

Nov 15, 2008 20:55

Had a few spare spoons today, so I took over the kitchen and made up a week or two of meals. (I like to keep more on hand, but with how often Sparky the Wonder Contractor and his Merry Band of Goons knock out our power, we're keeping it simple. The generator only keeps us for so long ( Read more... )

I will never understand why you resist the use of goose fat for roasting potatoes. Surely, even in the arsehole of nowhere that is your "oh, not far from Denver airport, baby, himself'll come getcha" palazzo, you can procure a goose for roasting to give (a) goose! roasted! and (b) enough goose fat for a good half year's potatoes.

PS What is an Adobo? Is it a travel site?

Garlic, oregano, onion powder, pepper, salt, and a bunch of other stuff -- it's useful for cooking with, since it saves you all sorts of time!

Americans don't usually eat goose; it has to be ordered in, and most people do not know how to cook it.

My mother tried once.

OMG, so inedible. I have had goose and liked it. But I doubt you're going to get many of us to attempt to cook one unless you know how, and will tell us? Cammie may know, she's awesome like that; I know I don't.

...great, now I'm hungry.

Also, I contest the assertion that I "won't use nearly all of" the carrots. Of course, I am well known to be crazy, in that my definition of 'salad' reads 'chopped carrots and salad dressing', possibly with other stuff thrown in. (Which, since you have made me hungry, I believe I will now have.)

*is drooling*

Now if only our oven had a fan, our kitchen had a window, and our smoke detector weren't really annoying when it goes off while you're cooking, I would make my dad make this for me.

(although really, only 4-5oz of steak per person? The way my family goes through steak...)

Five ounces of steak makes a full meal for the seven of us. (Onion, chop, saute till transparent, add however much water and however much rice, cover, simmer fifteen minutes, chop steak, throw on rice, simmer till water is gone, stir, serve with beef gravy and veggies. Good stuff.)

Yeah, my family likes our steak. I can finish a 12oz steak myself without trying (or closer to 8oz if we're talking full works - potatoes and veggies etc.), but I don't eat all that much otherwise. Ummmmm. Steak.

Damn, this sounds really, really good. But our kitchen fan sucks (might as well not have one) and even regular cooking smells linger through the house (open-plan living - great if you have a exhaust fan that works.) Also our dalmatian freaks right out if anything produces smoke (there was an incident with Mum forgetting a heating frying pan. Smoking oil - not good.)

I happened to have some extra spoons last night and took advantage to do a bit of cooking - bacon and mustard frittata with tomato and spinach. Worked out quite nicely and now there are two portions in the freezer. *is happy*

Oh, this sounds great. And not overly complex either, which is a big plus. I'll definitely try this out within the next couple of weeks.

Hmph. I need a food icon. But I suppose this one conveys my appreciation well enough.
