so i'm watching cartoon kat-tun, which is surprisingly much more amusing than i originally thought. the show's theme song is avril lavigne's "girlfriend", though i suspect none of the people involved with picking that song understand english. that song for a japanese all-male idol talk show? very strange.

the show has a recurring segment where the guys play a weird hybrid of bingo and darts with a special guest, and avril plays with them once. she, of course, doesn't know any japanese. she did get out a "konnichiwa", which the guys were impressed with. haha. otherwise, she spoke through a translator, which seems to be pretty par for the course, really. they were asking her some complicated questions. the thing is, the guys were trying to be nice and talk to her a lot, but if she wasn't throwing a dart, she was slowly backing away from them and not making eye contact. she kept darting her eyes to someone off camera, possibly a handler/manager? it was really awkward.

at the end of the game, the guys gave her a pink kimono to wear, and told her that they "wouldn't mind" if she wore it at a show she was in the country for. oh japanese language, so polite and unimposing. so she said a little "arigato gozaimasu" (UGH YOU HAVE ONE PHRASE TO SAY PLEASE AT LEAST ATTEMPT TO PRONOUNCE IT RIGHT) and just stood there, half-smiling.

it was one of the most awkward things i've ever watched.
