There was a big expose' about them a couple of months back, and the author is right... they borrowed a lot from the Masonic groups.

*heh* reminds me of times I spent with a wonderful italian ex-catholic practioner of Santeria (sp?) and Tibetan buddhism. Odd stove-cooked herbal baths you had to pour over your head several times and have cigar smoke and rum blown on you and then you just STEEP for a while...

Followed by sculpting little objects out of butter to leave on the altar...

and several other arcane things... It was intense, beautiful, mystical, and, well... very very odd.
