(This is originally a reply to Xzadfor's FA journal, but I think it deserves a post on its own, and I don't use FA for blogging, usually

I agree with all of this, but there's one thing we should be aware of. Even if there is not a "hard" cap in place, there is often a "soft" cap that creates a problem. The soft cap is where you miss the main rush when bookings open. There are certain hotels, room types, room nights that are desirable that sell out very quickly. If you're staying Thursday night (Wednesday at some cons), or you need a double bed room, or you want to stay in the main hotel, you better be at the computer the minute it opens up or else you're not going to get what you want

If only Europe had a couple more cons …I was about to wholeheartedly agree here, but then I reflected: Compared to some years ago Europe now has a fairly vivid convention scene, there are a multitude of smaller conventions and meets spanning an extended weekend available. However, given the language barriers of the European countries, the attendance of the respective convention is still very local, regional or national at least. Once the language of the convention is spoken in more countries, the availability of conventions also increases. A good example would be Russian, French or German spoken areas. Me, attending events in the German Spoken areas can travel Austria, Germany and Switzerland and therefore can't say I am lacking events and cons to go to (restrictions being more financial and job related ;D

Capping is generally best if you reach max capacity at a venue, and those running the event do not want to change locations. San Diego Comic Convention (SDCC) is huge and in the past few years had to cap. Same with Otakon. Those two events are not going anywhere

I'd eventually like to come out for Eurofurence. I always hear good things. I'm currently paying off my student loans and a few other things that are an expense priority, but it's something I'd like to save up for eventually.
Thank you for sharing this here too. I am staring into this exact problem right now, and I still have not felt any comfort into any in either direction. But I am afraid that postponing the decision will lead to disaster too.
I'm sorry if my opinion on conventions spurned you stress but it was just that, an opinion.
Cons will do what cons will do and people will or will not go. I've been going to cons of various types since the mid 1980's and one thing I make clear in my opinion (post) is that I know what I like and expect to get from attending a con. So my post (on FA) was merely discussing my own choices because people have been bugging me to go to AC which is a 2 hour drive for me and I was explaining, in mass, why I was not attending the con anymore. When FA is up again I'll re-read my post to insure it reads like that. I know it was long winded but it was not meant to attack a con.
I know people who work on cons put in a lot of work for the benefit of others. My intention is not to tarnish that.
